Training by strongman Jirka Vytiska - Log Lift #1

Atlas Stone means concrete ball in Czech. This is another strongman discipline. I think it is very popular among strongmen and spectators alike. A lot of big competitions end with this discipline and also decide the winner(World Strongest man, The World's Strongest Man Arena Tour, Ultimate Strongman, etc.).

I have to admit that Atlas Stone is not one of my top disciplines and it gives a lot of strongmen a bit of trouble, but unfortunately there's not much we can do about that. So the only thing left to do is to get on with it and work hard.

The Atlas Stone training itself - it's important to have "balls", because trying it on something like this is a whole different thing.

It's one of the disciplines where technique really matters. Sure, strength is important, but you can't do it without technique. So if you want to do Atlas, get someone who knows what it's all about to show you!

When I train Atlases, I start on the lightest setting - I lift up to my shoulder a few times . I'll have a hard time describing how many sets and how many reps I ride. For me, it's all about the feeling. One workout I want to lift the heaviest I have, other times more reps with"normal weight". I can toss over a Super Yoke for example , lift on a platform , or I can do a little race and lift from lightest to heaviest. And maybe just shoulder again.

Exercises that can help you improve this super discipline might be:

  • Deep squats
  • Deadlifts
  • Lunges in front of the body
  • Bicep Lifts

These are just a few exercises, but like I said, Strongman is all about the whole body. It's about full-body strength. And most importantly, technique!

So I wish you lots of strength and do it with your head!
