Ginseng true

Ginseng (Latin: Panax ginseng) is one of the world's most famous medicinal plants. It can also be found under a number of other names, most notably allspice ginseng, Korean ginseng, Chinese ginseng, or, depending on how the root is processed, red ginseng and white ginseng.

It is a perennial plant with palmately folded leaves and small greenish flowers that later turn into red fruits. The most valuable part of ginseng, however, is the branching root hidden underground. It is this which has exceptional medicinal properties.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng, or eleutherococcus barbed, also called ginseng false, is very popular for its significant medicinal properties. It too is an important adaptogen with a wide range of positive effects on human health.

Siberian ginseng is a deciduous shrub up to 2 metres tall, which grows mainly in moist mixed and coniferous forests. It is one of the hardy and undemanding plants, so it can be grown in our area, unlike true ginseng.

Other types of ginseng

Sometimes Korean/Indian ginseng can be confused. However, a completely different plant is referred to as Indian ginseng, namely the vitania snodar or ashwaganda.

There is also a so-called five-leaved ginseng. Although it too grows in Asia, it is again a different medicinal plant that has nothing botanically in common with true ginseng.

How to use ginseng

Dietary supplements with ginseng extracts are usually taken 1 x daily, usually in the morning. Tablets, capsules and capsules are convenient forms. These simply need to be taken with a sufficient amount of liquid.

But ginseng is also popular in powder form, which can be mixed in a drink or yoghurt, for example. The recommended dosage is approximately 1 to 2 grams of powder per day, but the prescribed dosage for a particular product should always be followed.

How to recognise good quality ginseng

The quality of ginseng is mainly influenced by the harvest and processing method. Ginseng plants have the maximum content of active substances if they are harvested after 6 years of growth. The most prized is the so-called red root, which is first steamed before drying.

Side effects of ginseng

The prescribed dosage should always be observed. Failure to do so may cause indigestion, increased blood pressure, insomnia or nervousness. Diabetics, people taking antidepressants, diuretics, immunosuppressants or blood thinners should consult a doctor for safety when taking ginseng.

Ginseng preparations are not suitable for children, pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Frequently Asked Questions

Given its strongly stimulating effects, take it exclusively in the morning with breakfast or in the first half of the day (e.g., before an afternoon workout). If you were to take it in the evening, you risk severe insomnia. And yes, with ginseng, cycling is strictly recommended—after 4 to 6 weeks of regular use, take at least a two-week break so your body doesn't build a tolerance to the stimulant.

Partially yes; you may feel a mild boost and better blood flow about an hour after taking it. But beware, its true power is cumulative. In order for ginseng to fully optimize your nervous system, lower cortisol, and build up in your body, it must be taken regularly every single day for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Only then will you feel its true potential.

Absolutely yes, it is legendary in this regard! Ginseng contains active compounds called ginsenosides, which significantly improve blood circulation (by dilating blood vessels) throughout the entire body. Added to this is its ability to drastically lower stress levels. Thanks to this combination, it naturally and very effectively supports vitality, stamina, and sexual appetite in both men and women.

This is absolutely crucial when choosing! True Korean ginseng (Panax) is extremely potent; it has strongly stimulating and "warming" effects, making it perfect for a quick boost and maximum physical performance. Conversely, Siberian ginseng (Eleuthero) is much milder and is better suited for the long-term management of chronic stress, exhaustion, and deep immune support without overstimulating the body.

Ginseng is one of the absolute strongest natural adaptogens. Athletes and hard-working people love it because, unlike caffeine, it doesn't cause a rapid energy "kick" followed by a sudden crash and jitters. Ginseng provides the body with very stable, long-lasting energy, delays muscle fatigue, and generally increases the body's resilience against extreme physical and mental stress.
