What is chlorella?

Chlorella is a unicellular freshwater algae native mainly to Japan and Taiwan, where conditions are ideal for it due to the abundance of sunshine. It is now grown in special pools to avoid the risk of contamination. The name chlorella comes from the Greek word 'chloros' = green and the Latin suffix 'ella' = small.

What makes chlorella stand out and what does it contain?

Chlorella is high in chlorophyll (the most of any plant in the world), protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants. It is rich in amino acids, beta-carotene, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and vitamins B, C and E.

Chlorella and its effects:

  • Promotes immunity, vitality and energy.
  • It promotes normal function of the intestinal tract.
  • It is an antioxidant.
  • It supports normal liver function.

Chlorella is sought after by people oriented towards:

  • Effective detoxification,
  • boosting immunity and overall fitness,
  • weight control,
  • restarting the body,
  • replenishing vitamins and minerals.

Chlorella - use and dosage

  • When taking chlorella, care must be taken to ensure sufficient fluid intake to allow the detoxification process to take place properly.
  • If you are starting out, it is advisable to start with a small dose and gradually increase it. However, the daily dose of chlorella should not exceed 6 g for an adult.
  • Chlorella is usually taken in long-term cures. After three months of use, it is advisable to take a break for about one month.
  • Observe the dosage indicated on the packaging.

Chlorella - side effects and contraindications

Chlorella is a very safe food, but in some cases side effects may occur, which usually subside soon. If you experience any of the side effects, it is advisable to limit its use and, if necessary, consult a doctor about further use. Side effects may include: diarrhoea, nausea, flatulence, skin irritation or allergic reactions manifested by rash or itching. Due to a lack of studies, chlorella cannot be officially recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under 3 years of age.

Chlorella should be avoided by people who take blood thinners, have venous system disease or autoimmune disorders, and people with thyroid hyperfunction or chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

The difference between chlorella and spirulina

Chlorella has a very strong detoxifying effect and also contains a number of vitamins and minerals. In contrast, spirulina is a significantly richer source of vitamins and minerals, but is only a weaker detoxifier compared to chlorella. So for maximum effect, many people take them together, sometimes even in combination with young barley or other super greens.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard daily dose of high-quality chlorella is around 3 to 5 grams (which can mean 10 to 15 tablets a day). So that chlorella can effectively bind to toxins in the digestive tract, it is best to take it at least 30 minutes before a meal (ideally in the morning on an empty stomach) and wash it down with a large glass of clean water. Never wash it down with hot beverages, as you would destroy the precious enzymes!

Yes, it is a completely normal sign of successful detoxification! Under the influence of chlorella, your body has started to get rid of deeply seated toxins, and they have to get out somehow (often right through the skin or intestines). This state (the so-called Herxheimer reaction) usually subsides within a few days. The golden rule is: start with a very small dose (e.g., 2 to 3 tablets a day) and transition to the full athletic dose very gradually.

Although both are green, they have a different primary purpose. Chlorella is the absolute leader in deep detoxification, blood and liver cleansing, and tissue regeneration (it contains the unique Chlorella Growth Factor - CGF). Spirulina, on the other hand, is more of an "energy booster"—it contains more protein, stimulates overall vitality, and provides instant natural energy. For the perfect result, combining both algae is ideal.

This is absolutely the most important rule when buying! In nature, chlorella has an extremely tough cell wall that the human stomach cannot break down. If you were to eat regular chlorella, it would pass right through you without any benefit. A broken cell wall means that this tough outer shell has been gently mechanically fractured, allowing your body to absorb 100% of all the precious nutrients.

Chlorella is a single-celled freshwater algae with the highest chlorophyll content on the planet. For athletes, it acts as the ultimate deep cleanser. It can literally draw toxins, heavy metals, and waste products—which accumulate in the body from extreme food and supplement intake—out of the body (and digestive tract) like a magnet, while massively supporting a healthy gut microbiome.
