What are hemp seeds?

Hemp seeds are the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, the same plant that is used as a drug. But rest assured - for one thing, a different variety is usually used to grow the seeds, and even if it wasn't, all the cannabinoids are concentrated primarily in the leaves and flowers, not the seeds. So don't expect any hallucinations or a positive drug test after consuming cannabis seeds, it's completely out of the question. However, you can look forward to a nutritionally very valuable food that can make your diet more interesting. In 30 grams of hemp seeds you will find, according to the calorie tables, approximately:

Energy 168 kcal
Fats 13 grams
Carbohydrates 3 grams
Fibre 0 grams (only unhulled seeds contain fibre)
Protein 10 grams

What are the benefits of hemp seeds?

Hemp seeds are an extremely nutritious food and everyone should definitely include them in their diet from time to time. In addition to containing a lot of protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates, they are also associated with a huge amount of micronutrients. The following benefits in particular are often cited:

They can promote cardiovascular health

Cardiovascular problems are one of the most common causes of premature death. And besides the fact that hemp seed contains quite a bit of protein, it is also a rich source of arginine. If you're a little bit familiar with sports nutrition, we don't need to introduce this amino acid to you in depth. It is a part of many pre-workout supplements because it promotes the production of nitric oxide and thus blood flow. But according to scientific studies, higher nitric oxide levels also lead to lower blood pressure, which can have a positive effect on overall cardiovascular health. We have written about arginine in more detail in our separate article.

They can alleviate the symptoms of PMS

Premenstrual syndrome afflicts a number of women and even we men know that it is not a pleasant thing. PMS is often caused by an increased sensitivity to a hormone called prolactin, or a disproportion to other hormones. But hemp seeds contain gamma linolenic acid, which stimulates the production of other substances that have been shown to block the effect of prolactin. Although further studies would certainly be in order, so far it really looks like regular consumption of gamma linolenic acid could help with the symptoms of PMS.

They contain a variety of micronutrients

If you've read previous installments of our series on seeds, then you've probably already noticed that actually, more or less all seeds are incredibly nutritious. However, hemp seeds stand out from the crowd even compared to other representatives of this category and can be found in them, for example, magnesium, zinc, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium, as well as various polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamins B and E and other substances.

They can be used in a variety of baked goods, added to porridges, smoothies, salads, yoghurt, granola, to garnish soups or eaten on their own. Since they have a very pleasant nutty taste, you won't want to mess with them, even for watching movies in the evening.
