Chris Bumstead joins forces with Iain Vallier to destroy backs in preparation for 2023 Olympia

Classic Physique's Chris Bumstead is closing in on a title defense at Olympia. But first, in preparation for the biggest show of the year "Cbum" on October 4, 2023, he joins Iain Vallier for a brutal back workout. Iain recently announced that he' s retiring from active bodybuilding, but we see that he's still in the thick of things thanks to Chris, and they're brought together by family.

"My back was fucking random. I do like two work sets, one of them is often like a drop set or something. If not and I'm feeling good, I'll do three, but typically two work sets, six exercises, warm up with a pullover," Bumstead summed up a typical day with his back.

No one has been able to take the Classic Physique Olympia title he won from Breon Ansley away from Chris so far. Last year, the Canadian native secured his fourth Olympia gold trophy, which he achieved despite the many obstacles that stood in his way.

Now you can be inspired by the workout they did together:

  • Machine Pullover - 3 sets | 1 for 5 reps, 1 for 9 reps, 1 for 6 reps
  • Bent-Over Barbell Row -3 sets | 1 for 9 reps, 1 for 9 reps 1 partial rep, 1 for 15 reps
  • Single-Arm Dumbbell Row - 2 sets | 1 set alternating arms 4 reps each, 1 set 8 reps,
  • Chest Supported Row Machine - 3 sets | 1 set 10 reps, 1 set six reps 1 partial rep, 1 set 9 reps
  • Dual Cable Lat Pulldowns - 3 sets | 1 set 10 reps, 1 set 10 reps, 1 set 3 reps
  • Low Row Machine - 2 sets | 1 set 4 reps, 1 set 10 reps,
  • Chest Supported Real Delt Dumbbell Row - 1 set | 1 set 10 reps,

"Let's go get my back a little hot. I've been neglecting spinal loads like the bracing. I've been doing a lot of chest support stuff, so I'm starting that today. I'm not going to go too heavy, I'm going to try to control the first five or six reps, lock in the press and focus on pressing into the hips and lower lats."

Bumstead is focused on his upcoming title defense, but the bodybuilding community keeps suggesting he should move on to the Open. The most recent speculation came from Milos Sarcev, who told Muscular Development's Ron Harris that the 28-year-old Bumstead was considering his chances in the no-size limit division.
