Dorian Yates Reveals the Only 2 Supplements That Actually Make Sense!
Six-time Mr. Olympia champion Dorian Yates opened up in a recent interview about his supplement regimen in the 1990s and shared his growing concerns about the premature deaths of young athletes. What’s behind sudden death syndrome, and which supplements does the legend consider absolutely essential?
A bodybuilding legend of the 1990s, Dorian Yates became famous not only for his massive and finely defined physique, but also for his tough and uncompromising approach to training, which allowed him to defeat stars like Flex Wheeler and Shawn Ray. Today, at 64 and retired from the sport, he focuses much more on his health and longevity. In a recent video, he shared which supplements accompanied him during his reign at Mr. Olympia and also addressed a very serious issue in today’s bodybuilding world.

2 Supplements Yates Won’t Compromise On
While today’s market is saturated with hundreds of different products, Yates relied on the absolute basics. Which two supplements did he label as “non-negotiable”?
1. Protein: Yates revealed that the first supplement he ever took was plain protein.
“When I started working out, I was doing manual labor, and those were physically very demanding jobs. I didn’t have time to sit down and eat a proper meal. A protein shake was an easy, quick, and convenient way to get protein,” Yatesexplained .
Back then, it was basic milk and egg protein; the popular whey protein didn’t hit the market until later.
2. Creatine: According to Yates, the second essential supplement is creatine. He also shared an interesting fact—the first studies on the effects of creatine didn’t involve people, but racehorses, where huge sums of money were at stake to maximize performance. Today, creatine is the most extensively researched supplement in the world, and for Yates, it remains an absolute staple.
Yates also mentioned that he was among the pioneers in the use of powdered BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) in the early 1990s. From today’s perspective, he also highly recommends vitamin D3 supplementation for everyone to maintain overall health.

Sudden Death Syndrome: Why Are Young Athletes Dying?
In recent years, the bodybuilding world has been shaken by a series of premature deaths. This prompted Yates to investigate the causes of why very young athletes suddenly die of heart failure.
According to Dorian, the following factors play a key role:
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Intense training and heavy sweating lead to the loss of important minerals. Fortunately, many athletes are already addressing this problem by supplementing with sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
- Selenium deficiency: Yates points out that a selenium deficiency can lead to fatal heart problems.
“Young guys train hard, they sweat, but then they stuff themselves with unhealthy ‘junk food’ and don’t get enough nutrients. Some of these things really hit close to home for me,” he added , noting that as a father, he’s concerned about the younger generation.
Yates isn’t the only legend warning against this trend. For example, eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney recently pointed out that young competitors are ruining their kidneys and overall health just to achieve the most extreme and “dry” look possible on stage.

Concluding Summary
Even at 64, Dorian Yates closely monitors his diet and health. His message is clear: when it comes to supplements, stick to the functional basics— high-quality protein and creatine—and make sure your diet provides sufficient micronutrients and minerals (including often-overlooked selenium and vitamin D3). The extreme pursuit of results must not come at the expense of your basic health.
