The exercise specialist critiques Joe Rogan's workout routine, diet and use of PEDs

Joe Rogan hosts an immensely popular podcast and in addition serves as a commentator for mixed martial arts superpower UFC. Rogan continues to be in the spotlight today and frequently highlights his diet and training routines, prompting Dr. Israetel to break down his nutrition, exercise style and use of testosterone replacement therapy.

Dr. Mike Israetel jumped right into Joe Rogan's exercise routines and shared his thoughts on kettlebell training.

"Kettlebells are pretty cool for functional training. I'll tell you that almost everything you can do with a kettlebell is pretty cool to do as well, but one-arms and axes serve better. If you really like the way kettlebells feel, you're comfortable with the movement, there's nothing damn wrong with them.

But I'd say if you're only going to focus on kettlebells as a priority in your workouts, I'd definitely focus more on the axle and single-arm first. Or also the bodyweight movements, push-ups, pull-ups, dips, those are incredible."

Moving on to Rogan's next preferred exercise, Dr. Israetel reveals that he is not a fan of Turkish get-ups

"The Turkish getup may be the most spectacular move ever invented in weightlifting. It's completely purposeless, it looks like the waiter fell down and was still trying to make sure he didn't spill rice all over the place. No offense to anyone."

Moreover, Israetel describes the Turkish getup as a "purposeless" movement that does little to build strength.

"The Turkish getup is like a parlor trick of lifting; it's not very clear to exercise scientists exactly what system is the limiting factor for the Turkish getup. The reality is that it's probably the strength of your lateral deltoid muscle, and it's not even a good way to build lateral deltoid strength. It only tests shoulder stability."

Next, Dr. Mike Israetel discusses Joe Rogan's use of PEDs, specifically his TRT regimen.

"TRT is cool,"

Israetel says. Israetel goes into TRT in more detail and explains that while it can be a great resource for transforming your body, it can also be completely unnecessary and lead to negative side effects.

"The thing with TRT is that it can be completely transformative if you need it. But if your testosterone levels come back and are completely back to normal, you probably don't need it. One of two things is going to happen. Either you're going to take it and you're going to have all these nasty side effects and you're going to have to keep injecting for no reason, or you're going to take TRT and the injections are going to be fine and everything's going to be fine, it's not going to bother you, but somehow nothing's going to happen."

As for Rogan's diet, Dr. Mike Israetel defends sugar, which Rogan says would negatively affect people's health

"Almost all scientists say sugar is perfectly fine with not bringing in a ton of excess calories. That's how sugar is bad. Plus, if you're eating a ton of processed waste, it doesn't matter if it's processed waste of protein, sugar, or carbohydrates, which are simple sugars, or fats, it's all dog shit."

Dr. Israetel moved on to seed oils, where he unequivocally states that they have been proven to not be harmful to health.

"Seed oils. No controversy. they've studied it more or less in depth and there's nothing wrong with seed oils. They are perfectly fine and in most contexts perfectly healthy."

Finally, Dr. Israetel examines Joe Rogan's carnivore diet. He points out that this diet alone will not sustain energy levels and reminds his followers that carbohydrates are best for performance nutrition.

"A carnivore or carnivorous diet can keep energy levels relatively stable. The bad news is that this diet, how shall I put this, carbohydrates are the undisputed eternal king of performance nutrition. If you want to give your best performance in grappling, lifting weights, running, anything that you do that requires high intensity effort and focus and tremendous physical demands, there is no substitute for carbohydrates."
