Lee Haney talks about the memorable photo shoot after his first Mr. Olympia win in 1984
Bodybuilding icon Lee Haney takes away a lot of strong memories from his time in the sport. He recently looked back on his most iconic photo shoot shortly after winning his first Mr. Olympia title in 1984.
As an active competitor in the IFBB professional league, Lee Haney was unique and versatile. Haney possessed an aesthetic combination of mass, fitness and fullness of muscle and reigned as Mr. Olympia from 1984-1991. During his career, he competed against luminaries of the bodybuilding world, defeating such names as Frank Zane, Lee Labrada, and six-time champion Dorian Yates. In addition to discussing his rivalry with Yates, Haney also criticized the standards that exist today in the men's Open category. He continues to warn aspiring bodybuilders of the dangers of dehydration and poor training. In light of this growing problem, Haney recommended a set of tips for safe preparation for competitions that focus on proper nutrition.

Haney isn't the only bodybuilding veteran to focus on dehydration lately. Samson Dauda's coach, Milos Sarcev has addressed this topic as has the great athlete from the 90's, Rich Gaspari. Sarcev believes that dryness should no longer be rewarded by judges because it encourages dangerous practices.
In his latest Instagram post, Haney nostalgically shared a photo after winning his first Olympic title. He explained how the iconic photo was taken and that a nearby police officer was tasked with stopping oncoming vehicles and Mike Nevuea took the photo right in the middle of New York traffic, which was no easy task even at the time.
"In 1984, after winning my first Mr. Olympia title and completing a studio shoot, I was asked by the photographer (Mike Nevuea) to stand in front of a hole for an outdoor shot. I said to him, 'Who's going to stop the traffic?' Lo and behold, a police officer was standing nearby and stopped the traffic. I took my shirt off and the rest is history. Thanks to Mike and one of New York City's Finest, this is one of my most iconic photos. I love New York," Lee Haney shared his impressions.
