"Keep It Simple," Lee Labrada and Hunter Labrada share their pre-workout meal
Lee Labrada teamed up with his son Hunter Labrada to discuss the intricacies of pre-workout nutrition. In a recent YouTube video, Lee and Hunter revealed what their typical pre-workout meals are and offered their top tips for getting the most out of every workout.
Hunter placed as high as fourth at the prestigious Mr Olympia 2021 competition, despite finishing sixth on the big stage just last month, the same competition where Derek Lunsford became the first two-division champion.
Food before training Lee Labrada
- 6 oz 99/1 Ground Turkey (39 grams protein, 0 grams carbs, 2 grams fat)
- 150 grams jasmine rice (4 grams protein, 43 grams carbs, 0 grams fat)
- 50 grams black beans (11 grams protein, 31 grams carbohydrate, 1 gram fat)
- 2 mango slices (1 gram protein, 20 grams carbohydrate, 0 gram fat)
"This is a typical all-day meal for me. I have this meal about an hour before my workout. Yes, I'd say it's about six ounces of turkey breast. Then I'll have something like these mango slices for dessert to give me some extra carbs.
It's just a great meal, there's more than enough protein in it. There's enough carbs in it to get me started on my workout. I've got a beetroot salad I'm going to have with my meal. I'm a big believer in indulging in natural vegetables and salads throughout the day and getting plenty of fiber. I think it's good for gut health."
Hunter's pre-workout meal
- 120 grams of chicken (37 grams protein, 0 grams carbs, 4 grams fat)
- 80 grams of beef (17 grams protein, 0 grams carbs, 6 grams fat)
- 300 grams of jasmine rice (7 grams protein, 86 grams carbohydrate, 1 gram fat)
- 10 grams of ghee butter (0 grams protein, 0 grams carbohydrate, 10 grams fat)
"I'm a big fan of ghee for several reasons. First, it has antimicrobial effects in the gut. Secondly it is a very healthy fat and thirdly it adds a distinct flavour to the food.
Since this is a pre-workout meal, I think the biggest thing we should be talking about is which foods you should or shouldn't eat before a workout and with what advance notice you should eat them. After eating this pre-workout meal, we're going to train our legs.
Once you have protein on your plate, add complex carbohydrates and some essential fats. Good fats, as we call them, if you will.Put a salad in there, some vegetables for the fiber and micronutrients and phytonutrients."
