A lot of people make this mistake at the gym, and it slows down their muscle growth!

Do you go to the gym regularly and complete every set diligently, but still aren’t seeing the results you want? Legendary bodybuilder Rich Gaspari has pointed out one crucial thing that, in his opinion, many people overlook during their workouts. And yet, it can determine just how effectively you’re able to build muscle mass!

It’s not enough just to lift weights. You have to feel the muscle, too!

Rich Gaspari is one of the most prominent figures in the history of professional bodybuilding. In 1989, he became the very first winner of the Arnold Classic, and during his career, he even gave eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney a run for his money.

Although he stopped competing long ago, he still trains to this day and regularly shares his experience with the younger generation. In a recent Instagram post, he pointed out a mistake he notices among many gym-goers. According to him, it’s not enough to just mechanically lift weights and count repetitions. What’s essential is the so-called “mind-muscle connection.”

Gaspari explained that during each set, you should focus your attention on the specific muscle group you’re working on. Whether it’s your chest, biceps, or shoulders, it’s important to be aware of both the muscle contraction and the stretch.

Put your phone away and focus on your workout!

Gaspari notes that many people spend a lot of time at the gym but don’t pay enough attention to what they’re actually doing during the workout itself. Instead of focusing on their muscles working, they check their phones, chat with others, or perform each repetition almost automatically. According to the bodybuilding legend, this can cause them to unnecessarily miss out on some of the results they could otherwise achieve.

“If you want to see changes in your physique, you have to connect your mind with your muscles,” Gaspari emphasized.

According to him, people can go to the gym every day, but if they can’t consciously engage the muscle groups they’re working out, their physique may not change as much as they’d expect. Gaspari therefore recommends minimizing all distractions during workout sets and focusing fully on the execution of each repetition.

Does the mind-muscle connection really work?

Interestingly, Gaspari’s recommendation is supported to some extent by scientific research. A 2018 study by Brad Schoenfeld and his colleagues followed 30 untrained men who lifted weights for eight weeks while focusing their attention in different ways. One group focused on working specific muscles, while the other paid attention primarily to the movement of the weights themselves.

The result? The group that focused on the muscles being worked saw an average increase in bicep thickness of 12.4%, while the other group saw an increase of 6.9%.

However, no similar difference was observed for the thigh muscles. The results thus suggest that consciously focusing on a muscle can be helpful for building muscle mass, but it may not work the same way for every exercise or muscle group. Furthermore, during maximum strength efforts, it may actually be more beneficial to focus on the movement itself and the outcome. The mind-muscle connection is therefore not some miracle trick that can replace a quality training plan, progressive overload, or adequate recovery.

Jay Cutler shares a similar philosophy!

Rich Gaspari is certainly not the only bodybuilding legend to highlight the importance of the mind-muscle connection. Four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler, who continues to engage in strength training regularly even in his 50s, has long advocated a similar approach. Cutler, too, emphasizes controlled movement, proper technique, and the ability to target specific muscle groups.

And that is precisely the main message behind Gaspari’s advice. It’s not just about how many kilograms you have on the barbell, but also about how you work with them. So if , during your next workout, you find yourself focusing more on your phone screen than on the exercise itself, it might be time to make a change. High-quality reps, proper form, and conscious muscle engagement can actually be far more important for your results than mindlessly adding more weight plates.

Do you want to focus as much as possible on your muscles during your workout and get the most out of every rep? In addition to proper technique and the mind-muscle connection, the right supplements can help! A high-quality pre-workout stimulant containing caffeine will boost your alertness, concentration, and readiness for a demanding workout. For better blood flow to your muscles and a serious muscle pump, try citrulline malate, a popular component of pre-workout supplementation. And don’t forget about magnesium, which contributes to the normal functioning of muscles and the nervous system. Focus on every rep, train to the fullest, and push your results to the next level!
