86 centimeters of steel: The secret of Robert Förstemann's thighs
In the world of professional cycling, people usually talk about speed, endurance and strategy. But then there's Robert Förstemann - a German track cyclist whose name has become synonymous with something else entirely: legs so massive they've earned him the nickname "Quadzilla". Although he has a world title and an Olympic medal to his name, the world remembers him mainly for his muscles that defy human limits.

More than just giant legs.
Before we delve into the mystery of his legendary quadriceps, let's remember that thirty-eight-year-old Robert Förstemann is first and foremost a top athlete. In 2010, he became world champion in the team sprint and two years later hung a bronze medal around his neck at the London Olympics. Today, he no longer races alone - his strength has found a new application. He works as a tandem bike pilot and helps visually impaired cyclists achieve their sporting dreams.
The "Quadzilla" phenomenon and 86 centimetres in circumference
It all started with a viral photo from the Olympics. The picture, in which Förstemann's legs look like tree trunks next to those of his colleague André Greipel (no slouch himself), has been flying around the world. The figures are as incredible as the sight of them. According to talkSport, the circumference of his thighs is a whopping 86 centimetres.
The Secret of Steel Thighs: Gymnastics, Pounds and Strategy
How do you build legs like that? It's all down to a meticulously designed training plan and thousands of hours in the gym. In an interview with Men's Health, he revealed the key elements of his success:
- Heavy squats. He does dozens of reps with lower weight in the off-season, but before the peak season, he increases the load to a maximum of 280 kg for 1 to 3 reps.
- Single Leg Leg Press. This way, he builds functional strength.
- Bulgarian Squats: For stability and strength, he adds this challenging exercise to his training, with weights up to 160 kg.
His strength is not just for show. He says he has no problem riding more than 200 kilometres on his road bike because of it.
