Why is it good to do pull-ups with heavy weight?

We have another interesting tip for you from former weightlifter and current physiotherapist and fitness trainer Dr. Aaron Horschig! This time Aaron will try to briefly explain why it's good to do pull-ups with heavy weight.

Dr. Aaron Horschig:

"Why would a weightlifter practice holding a heavy weight in front? The easiest answer is this. It overloads his ability to hold heavy weight in front, which increases, and it improves positional stability, which has transferability to performance in the front squat and the deadlift.

Remember, improved mid-body stability improves our ability to produce power with our legs and arms. Holding the weight in front for 3-5 seconds is actually a heavy isometric exercise for the center of the body that must maintain stability in the standing position. It is a very position-specific exercise for weightlifters and can be an excellent supplement."

Why would a weightlifter perform heavy rack holds? The most simple answer is by overloading the front rack position, the lifter is able to improve capacity to handle heavy load & improve positional stability in a manner that should help carry over to better performance in the front squat & jerk.??‍♀️ . Remember improved core stability enhances our ability to produce power in our arms and legs. A heavy rack hold for 3-5 seconds is basically a heavy isometric on the core to maintain stability in this standing position. It’s very position specific for the weightlifter & can be a great accessory movement. .
