Incredible form after 50! Jay Cutler Reveals His Current Workout
Four-time Mr. Olympia titleholder Jay Cutler may have hung up his competition swimsuit long ago, but his training ethic is still incredible. Even at 52 years old, when he could be enjoying a well-deserved retirement, he's working out in the gym seven days a week.
While many former pros lose form after their careers, Cutler maintains a physique that would be the envy of exercisers a generation younger. In a recent video (November 2025), he let fans get a peek under the hood of his current workout, where he focused on his pecs, calves and abs.
Let's take a look at how this legendary "Comeback Kid" trains to maintain muscle mass and health well into his 50s.
Training philosophy after 50
Jay Cutler is no longer breaking records at maximum weights. His current approach is all about smart training. The key is maximum muscle sensation, constant tension and using machines that are gentler on the joints than free weights. As he puts it, the goal is to keep yourself "chiseled" and maintain muscle quality.
Training schedule: Breasts, Abs, Calves
Here's a breakdown of the exercises Cutler included in this workout:
1. Chest Workout
In this workout, Jay focused on machines and specific tools that allow him to have better control over the movement.
Arsenal Strength Loaded Standing Chest Press
Jay uses a maximum of three discs per side on this machine. He finds it convenient that the machine works unilaterally (each arm works separately).
"This is one of my favorite machines. Because each side works independently, you can compensate for the force imbalance between the left and right hands," explains Cutler.
Incline Bench Press with J-Bells (Incline J Dumbbell Press)
Instead of traditional dumbbells, Jay used what he calls "J-Bells." These dumbbells are shaped like a ball with a handle inside.
"It's like holding a bowling ball. The hand is inside, which helps keep the weight evenly distributed. It's great for beginners or for those who have trouble balancing on traditional one-armed dumbbells," he adds .
Seated Cable Chest Press
For the third exercise, he chose pulley presses. The reason for this is the constant tension in the muscle.
"With single-arm machines, you often use inertia (momentum). With pulleys, the muscle is under tension throughout the entire movement, which provides a better contraction," Jaydescribes the difference.
2. Abdominal (Abs) Training
Jay definitely doesn't neglect the abs and has included a combination of exercises for the entire abdominal musculature:
- Kneeling Pulley Crunches (Kneeling Rope Crunch) - A classic for building "bricks" on your abs.
- Incline Bench Sit-Ups - Exercise aimed at complex abdominal muscle work.
- Hanging Leg Raises - One of the best exercises for the lower abdomen.
3. Calves Training (Calves)
Calves have always been Cutler's forte. In this workout, he stuck to the tried and true classics:Standing/Sitting Calf Raises.
4. Cardio at the end
Jay finished the workout with 20 minutes on the treadmill. Even in the bulkier phase or during maintenance, cardiovascular health is a priority for him.
