How to maximize back width and density even after 50? Bet on Jay Cutler's tips!

Even at 52, bodybuilding legend Jay Cutler isn't slowing down. The four-time Mr. Olympia winner recently revealed his current back workout on his YouTube channel, which focuses on extreme muscle blood flow (called pumping), building width and density. Cutler, who dethroned Ronnie Coleman in his glory days, continues to inspire fans and show how to train effectively with an emphasis on longevity and muscle quality.

If you're looking for inspiration for your "back day," check out Cutler's pump-focused routine that will have your muscles literally bursting under your skin.

Key rules according to Jay Cutler

Before you get into the actual exercises, it's good to know Cutler's philosophy for this type of workout:

  • Repetition Range: To achieve maximum skin-bursting pump, Jay sticks to 8 reps as a rule of thumb. He never goes below this limit.
  • Volume of work.
  • Technique: The emphasis is on precise execution and feeling the muscle, not mindlessly lifting heavy weights.

The back workout schedule

Here are the exercises Jay Cutler has chosen to build a massive back:

1. Reverse Pulldowns

The workout begins with three working sets of pulldowns with an underhand grip (or reverse grip).

  • Why: This movement is great for stretching the latissimi (broad back muscle).
  • Tip: Jay likes to work both arms at once, but on a suitable machine, each side can be worked separately (isolateral). He takes a few sets to "feel" the movement before working sets.

2. Pull-ups on the Hammer Strength (Low Row) machine - one arm

The second exercise is machine pull-ups, where Jay trains each arm separately.

  • Jay uses chest support to keep his body in a stable position. He cautions against too much bending or "pulling" with the chest.
  • Goal: Maximum muscle contraction. The key is to isolate the back and not help yourself with the jerk.

3. Pullover on the machine (Pullover Machine)

The following is an exercise on the Nautilus machine for the pullover, which is driven by a chain.

  • Advantage: According to Cutler, this machine is indispensable for stretching and lengthening latissimus. Although the pullover can be practiced with a one-handed pulley or pulley, the specific grip of this machine is unique, he says.

4. Rowing on the bottom pulley (Dual Pulley Seated Cable Row)

In this exercise, Jay uses a palms-down grip (overhand grip) and two separate pulleys.

  • Common mistake: Many people engage the glutes, legs, and biceps in the deadlift.
  • Jay's tip: Try to keep your back straight and pull the weight purely using your back muscles. Aim for 8 to 12 reps.

5. 12 to 12 repetitions, or 8 to 12 pull-ups.

A classic that was a staple of Cutler's training during his competitive career.

  • Effect: While many people can build decent back width, this exercise is king for building density and mass in the mid-back muscles.

6. Pulldown Machine

At the end of the workout, he incorporates another pulldown on the machine where he sits close to the backrest.

  • Technique.
  • Intensity: He performs a very short pause (quarter to half a second) in the lower phase for maximum compression of the muscle. He used to do 7-8 sets, now he just does 3 sets of 8+ reps.
