Dorian Yates' legendary 1993 biceps workout, which earned him the Mr. Olympia title, has been revealed
Bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates recently revisited his old training journal. In a recent Instagram post, he revealed a grueling “Blood and Guts”-style biceps workout that helped him dominate the stage and win the 1993 Mr. Olympia competition.
A High-Intensity Approach
Throughout his career, Dorian Yates adopted a high-intensity training (HIT) approach that propelled him to the very top of the Men’s Open division. While building his legacy, he defeated a number of bodybuilding stars, such as Kevin Levrone, Shawn Ray, and Flex Wheeler. Yates was always known primarily for the incredible definition of his back muscles, and he himself candidly admitted that his arms were never his strongest assets.
His journey was further complicated by two serious injuries. Six weeks before Mr. Olympia in 1994, he tore his biceps, and in 1997, he injured his triceps. Despite the fact that 90% of the muscle was torn, he managed to compete and win his final title. Now, “The Shadow” offers us a deeper look into his uncompromising training regimen from that time.

Biceps Workout for Mr. Olympia 1993
Yates revealed that this arm workout was the absolute foundation of his training in 1993. He incorporated it immediately after his chest workout.
“It all took place after a short break following my chest workout… Extreme effort in the ‘Blood & Guts’ style until muscle failure,” said Yates.
Here is the exact breakdown of the exercises, sets, and weights that the legend lifted:
-
Seated Incline Dumbbell Curls:
- 1st set (Warm-up): 50 lbs (approx. 22.5 kg) for 7 reps
- Set 2 (Workout): 70 lbs (approx. 32 kg) for 6 reps + 1 forced rep
-
Standing Barbell Curls:
-
1st set (Work set): 155 lbs (approx. 70 kg) for 5 reps + 1 forced rep, immediately followed by a drop set with 110 lbs (approx. 50 kg) for 3 reps
-
-
Single-Arm Cable Curls:
-
1st set (Work set): 40 lbs (approx. 18 kg) for 8 reps
-
Since leaving the competitive stage, Yates has been much more open about the strategies that led him to fame. Among other things, he revealed that he trained his abs only once a week at the end of his shoulder and triceps workout, because he considered that the “easiest” day, after which he still had plenty of energy left. His biceps, however, as you can see, required a completely different, brutal approach.
Want to train like a legend? You can’t do it without the right fuel!
But there’s a catch. Training your biceps with “Blood and Guts” intensity sounds great on paper, but in practice, such extreme effort to absolute failure will literally chew you up and spit you out without the right support. If you want to cut back on a ridiculous number of sets and instead give 100% on every rep, willpower alone won’t be enough.
The solution, however, is straightforward—give your body the best possible building blocks so that brutal training leads to growth, not overtraining. To even get yourself in the right mindset for such a grueling workout, fuel up with an uncompromising pre-workout that will put you in a state of absolute focus. During those few sets with maximum weight, protect your muscle fibers from catabolism with a generous dose of instant BCAAs or EAAs.
And once you’ve completed that last forced rep like Dorian? That’s exactly when your muscles are screaming for nutrients the most. Immediately supply them with the highest-quality building blocks in the form of premium whey protein, which will shorten recovery time and kickstart growth right away.
Stop making excuses about genetics. Forget about endless hours at the gym filled with pointless exercises. Max out your intensity, support your hard work with top-notch supplementation, and show everyone what real muscle growth means!
