Arnold Schwarzenegger explains why minimalist shoes will improve your deadlift with a trap axle

Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to share his years of experience and modern scientific knowledge with practitioners of all levels. In a recent edition of his newsletter, he focused on an often-overlooked detail that can make all the difference in your trap bar deadlift performance: choosing the right shoes.

According to the legendary bodybuilder, switching from traditional athletic shoes to minimalist footwear can yield significant improvements in both stability and overall strength.

What exactly did the researchers find?

Arnold refers to research that examined the differences between exercising in standard athletic sneakers and minimalist shoes (characterized by a low drop between heel and toe and wide toe space).

The researchers used so-called force plates - a high-tech device that accurately measures how much force your feet generate and how fast. The results speak clearly in favour of minimalist shoes:

  • Greater overall stability: the researchers looked at stability in multiple directions and found that minimalist shoes provide a much firmer base throughout the entire movement.
  • Greater force production: Exercisers in minimalist shoes were able to produce demonstrably greater absolute force during the deadlift.
  • Faster onset of force: In addition, maximum (peak) force was achieved in a much shorter time.

Why do traditional shoes hinder your performance?

The main problem, according to Schwarzenegger, is ground contact.

Most traditional athletic shoes have a thick cushioning layer and a raised heel. This design may be comfortable for running or walking, but it will literally trip up your feet when lifting heavy weights.

Arnold explained it precisely in their newsletter:

"The likely reason lies in the contact with the ground. The elevated heel in a cushioned shoe tilts your body weight forward and creates a layer between your foot and the floor. A well-designed minimalist shoe compensates for this: your foot sits more flat, your weight is distributed more evenly, and the feedback between your foot and the ground is improved."

What can you take away from this for your next workout?

If you're incorporating deadlifts with a trap axis into your training and want to maximize your strength potential, check your feet. Getting rid of the thick layer of foam and elevated heel will help you distribute the weight better, get a more confident stance, and lift the barbell faster and with more confidence. Sometimes all it takes to set a new personal best is simply standing with your feet firmly on the ground.
