Diet Coke is not poison! Stop believing the TikTok "experts" and start looking at the facts

We all heard it. The headlines scream that diet soda is a "toxic bomb" and that artificial sweeteners will slaughter your microbiome faster than Terminator enemies. The result? Millions of people have turned back to sugar rather than dieting, just to "protect their guts" while their weight skyrockets.

But Arnold Schwarzenegger and his team at Arnold's Pump Club decided it was time for a little honesty and a good dose of science. Because a new year-long clinical study shows that the reality is quite different than the TikTok "experts" are trying to tell us.

Arnold

The problem called "Mouse Science"

Why are we so afraid of sweeteners anyway? It all started in 2014 with a widely cited study that claimed sweeteners destroy gut bacteria. But there's a catch - this study was conducted primarily on mice. And as Arnold says:

"You're not a lab mouse, so stop acting like one."

In humans, the sample at the time was just seven (yes, 7!) participants. That's not science, that's statistical error.

What did the one-year test on humans show?

The new study, which lasted a full 12 months, followed overweight adults who were trying to maintain their weight. One group drank sugar-sweetened beverages, while the other group chose options with artificial sweeteners.

The results may surprise you:

  • Weight loss: the sweetener group maintained an average of 1.6 kg more weight loss than the sugar group.
  • No negative effects: The researchers observed no negative effects on blood sugar, insulin or cholesterol.
  • Shock to the microbiome (in a good way): People consuming sweeteners even had increased levels of beneficial bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These substances reduce inflammation and strengthen the intestinal barrier.

"Sweeteners are not a gut bomb, but a tool. If they can help you get rid of sugar, they are your ally," Arnold Schwarzenegger's team messages.

The trap of absolute truths

In his newsletter, Arnold often warns against so-called absolutism. In the fitness world, it is fashionable to look for one universal culprit for all evil.

  • In the 1980s, it was fat.
  • In the 90s, it was carbs.
  • Today it's artificial sweeteners or vegetable oils.

But the truth is, health is not about a black and white view of the world. If you're trying to lose weight and diet cola helps you fight off sweet cravings without the calories, that's perfectly fine from a science perspective. Your gut will survive it and your heart will thank you for the lower weight.

The 3 main rules for how to approach this:

  1. Don't fall victim to headlines: always look to see if the study was done on humans and how long it lasted.
  2. Listen to your body: If sweeteners don't do your digestion good (bloated belly), just don't drink them. It's easy.
  3. Look for sustainability: The best diet is the one you stick with. If it's using zero-sugar drinks, you're green.

Conclusion.

Artificial sweeteners aren't a "magic pill" for weight loss, but they're certainly not the demon they're made out to be. If you like them and they help you stay away from excessive sugar, science is on your side.
