How to keep cholesterol under control and prevent health complications

What is cholesterol and why is it important?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is essential for the proper functioning of our bodies. It plays a key role in the formation of cell membranes, hormones and vitamin D. Cholesterol in the body comes from two sources: the liver, which produces it naturally, and foods that contain saturated fats and trans fats. Although cholesterol is important for the body, excess cholesterol can be harmful.

Types of cholesterol: LDL, HDL and triglycerides

There are two main types of cholesterol that are measured in blood tests:

  • LDL (low-density lipoprotein): often referred to as "bad" cholesterol because high levels can lead to cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels. This can cause them to narrow or even block, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.
  • HDL (high-density lipoprotein): Known as 'good' cholesterol because it helps remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream and transport it back to the liver, where it is broken down and eliminated from the body.

In addition to these two types of cholesterol, triglycerides, which are fats found in the blood, are also measured. High levels of triglycerides can also increase the risk of heart disease.

Here are five quick tips to effectively tackle high cholesterol:

  1. Focus on diet: Limit saturated fats and trans fats, add more fiber, and include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish and nuts, in your diet.
  2. Exercise regularly: Exercising at least 30 minutes a day can raise good HDL cholesterol and lower bad LDL cholesterol.
  3. Lose weight: If you are overweight, losing even a few pounds can significantly improve your cholesterol levels.
  4. Stop smoking: Quitting smoking improves HDL cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease.
  5. Limit alcohol: Drink alcohol in moderation, as excessive consumption can raise triglyceride levels.
