Want faster recovery? Arnold is betting on a key mineral!
Arnold Schwarzenegger, bodybuilding and fitness icon, recently shared one of his key tips for faster recovery and reduced muscle soreness after a tough workout. In his "Arnold's Pump Club" newsletter, he highlighted the effects of magnesium, a mineral that plays a key role in many bodily processes.
Why is magnesium so important for athletes?
Schwarzenegger points out that magnesium is necessary for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including energy production and muscle contraction. For active individuals, sufficient intake is even more important. According to Arnold, athletes and active people may need 10 to 20 percent more magnesium than people with sedentary lifestyles.
The research he cites suggests that taking dietary supplements with magnesium about two hours before intense exercise can lead to less muscle soreness, known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), better exercise performance and faster recovery overall.

What type and how much magnesium to take?
Schwarzenegger personally recommends magnesium L-threonate, a form of magnesium that is highly absorbable by the body and also promotes better quality sleep. The recommended daily dose is between 250 and 400 mg of magnesium. For better absorption and to minimize any stomach upset, they advise taking magnesium with meals.
In addition to magnesium, Arnold mentions turmeric as another effective supplement for fighting inflammation and promoting recovery.
Incorporating magnesium into your supplementation plan can thus be a simple and effective way to boost your recovery and achieve better results in your training, just as bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger advises.
