Sam Sulek talks about his chest injury and discusses "Big Bulks" vs. "Lean Out" diets or fan hate and ADHD
Sam Sulek continues to gain widespread popularity thanks to his impressive physique and viral fitness content. In his first ever appearance on the Bro Chat podcast, Sam Sulek joins Lee Priest and Fouad Abiad to discuss a range of topics such as his recent chest injury, dieting for leanness versus bulk, ego lifting and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
After giddily gaining over 2.8 million subscribers on YouTube, Sam Sulek has captivated the world. He regularly shares content online and invites fans to join him on his journey to build a muscular physique. At just 21 years old, Sulek has become one of the most prominent faces of the sport, even though he hasn't yet tried his talents on stage.
Sam Sulek discusses chest injuries and describes his bulking vs. dieting
Sulek recently injured his chest and revealed how he feels after a minor tear.
"Yes, I've had worse injuries than this, not that I want to have any. But as I've had one before, it usually doesn't happen to be really sinewy.
I've had one on my right shoulder, sometimes it's been there for a while and then it goes away again, but now it's perfectly fine. But I had a wound on my right side when I woke up bad and when it was still fresh, it hurt like hell. But this injury will be fine."
After his last two "big volumes," Sam Sulek confided that he followed a 2,500-3,000 calorie diet.
"Honestly, I need to start eating bigger breakfasts," Sulek said. "If I don't start with a head start first thing in the morning, it's not hard to finish by a certain time, but I'm not completely desperate yet because I want to go at it gradually. With the last two big weight gains, that's been the case. I've been dieting around two and a half thousand to three thousand calories, which is the threshold for achieving leanness. It's not about being competition ready or anything like that. But it's about the higher one percent, eight or nine."
Sulek usually follows a diet of 5,000 to 6,000 calories, although he mentioned consuming up to 9,000 calories in the days following the diet.
"I jumped straight to 5,000, 6,000 calories because I was hungry for the first couple of weeks. Honestly, some of the first few days after the diet, I was tracking maybe 9,000 calories like it was nothing."
In addition, Sulek talked about his "egotistical" nature in the gym and the hateful comments from fans.
"I think I'm reaching a point where it's an unnecessary amount of weight. If I kept increasing the weight on squats, I'd get up to six reels, but that's pointless now. I think I'm a little too egotistical about bench pressing. I should probably stick to three reels and use them better."
"When I started posting... once you start seeing hateful comments, that's directly related to the video really succeeding. You have to look at it that way. 'Oh shit, people are freaking out, this is good'," Sam Sulek said.
Sulek mentioned that since childhood he had enough visual impairment to quickly learn various skills such as juggling and solving Rubik's cubes.
"I feel like I just have enough ADHD, maybe not as much now as I used to when I was a kid, where I could get immersed enough in something to learn and it was cool and then wake up one day and say this is fucking stupid and quit. I had a whole box of little Rubik's cubes. I feel like it was like two months ago when I ordered one that wasn't three by three but eleven by eleven."
This isn't the first time Sam Sulek has talked about his strategies for working out, losing weight and exercising. He stands by cardio exercise as an effective method to get fit and specifies that he prefers to ride an exercise bike because he can record his progress while playing games on his phone to keep himself entertained.
