Robby Robinson shares his 9 favourite exercises for each muscle group
Robby Robinson continues to prove why he was one of the greatest bodybuilders of his time. In a recent YouTube video, he revealed his favourite exercises for each muscle part and shared his experience in choosing them.
Known as the "Black Prince," Robinson was one of the leading names in the IFBB Pro League in the 1970s and '80s. He won titles such as Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe, and his skills were highly regarded - to this day, many believe he had some of the best arms of all time. Although he never lifted the prestigious Sandow Cup, this proven professional secured gold medals at Masters Olympia three times (twice in the Over 50 category - in 1994, 1997 and 2000). Even at the age of 77, Robby Robinson remains a star in the bodybuilding world.

Robby Robinson's most popular exercises for each muscle group
In the following overview you will find a selection of exercises that Robby Robinson considers the best for muscle growth and effective training of each muscle group.
Shoulders
Robinson starts with the shoulders and emphasizes that he wants to get them really worked out. His choice is the behind-the-neck press, where he emphasizes proper form and posture.
"If I were to train my shoulders, I would want to build really impressive, muscular shoulders - I choose the behind-the-head press. I lean slightly to ensure I'm pushing the weight directly into the deltoid muscles. It doesn't matter if I'm using a dumbbell or one-arm dumbbells, the main thing is to keep my upper back in the right arch."
Chest
When training his chest, Robinson can't pick just one exercise, so he prefers to alternate between one-handed and dumbbell presses.
"When I train chest, I definitely choose one-handed or push-ups with dumbbells. Those are my two main exercises - I like to alternate between incline and straight presses to maximize muscle growth and stimulation."
Biceps
To work the biceps, he emphasizes proper technique and body positioning to focus the load directly on the biceps.
"If I really want to load the biceps, I press my back against the wall and step my knees forward slightly, which shifts all the load to the biceps. I don't want my shoulders involved - I need to keep them back to ensure that the pressure is only on the biceps. If I move my shoulders forward, they take some of the load, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise."
Triceps
For the triceps, Robinson opts for an EZ barbell exercise with a narrow grip that effectively engages all three parts of the triceps. He performs this exercise on a straight bench.
"My choice for triceps is the EZ narrow press because it engages all three parts of the triceps. I let the weight drop and then pull it up - with this exercise I work not only the triceps, but also the front delts and chest. Another favourite exercise of mine is pulley extensions, where I hold my elbows close to my head, effectively loading the entire triceps."
Back
For the back, Robinson prefers simple but effective exercises - especially push-ups and T-bar pull-ups.
"Shrugs - whether performed with a front or back grip - are the foundation of back training for me. I then use T-bar pull-ups as a supplement."
Abs
To strengthen the abdominal muscles, she recommends hanging leg lifts or lying leg lifts, which effectively engage the entire abdominal area and help create an attractive V-shape.
"Hanging or lying leg lifts - these exercises really engage the entire abdominal area and help create that signature upper body V-shape."
Quadriceps
Squats are essential for the legs and overall lower body work. Robinson emphasizes that squats engage the entire body, while the leg press is used when he needs to give his back a break.
"Squats are key - they engage the whole body. If you need to give your back a rest, you can use the leg press, but squats are irreplaceable."
Hamstrings
For the back of the thighs, he opts for the stiff-legged deadlift and reminds you to maintain proper upper-back arch to keep the load on the hamstrings.
"The straight-legged deadlift - with this exercise, you must ensure that the upper back is in an arch, thus focusing the load solely on the hamstrings."
Calves
Finally, Robinson introduces his favourite exercise for the calves - donkey calf raises. This exercise is performed by having someone sit on your back while you perform five sets of 20 reps.
"Donkey calf raises - whenever someone sits on your back, you perform five sets of 20 reps. That was our way of training at the time. In the past, you rarely saw bodybuilders using sit-ups or standing calf machines - only this exercise had such an effect."
In addition to Robby's choice of exercises, other notable bodybuilders such as current five-time Classic Physique Olympia winner Chris Bumstead, nutritionist Stan Efferding and Open bodybuilding giant Nick Walker have shared their favourite training methods. Given Robby Robinson's unquestionable longevity and experience, his training approach is still very relevant and inspiring.
