Jay Cutler on how to improve abs: "Focus on more reps in the 15-20 range"

Jay Cutler rose to the top of the sport through easy to understand training practices that were critical to his success. In a recent short YouTube show, the bodybuilding legend talked about abdominal muscle training and which exercises are best for building a tighter, more defined midsection.

Like many other bodybuilders, Jay Cutler believes that abdominal muscle training is often overlooked and even ignored by athletes. Because a lower body fat percentage is needed to make abdominal muscles visible, but many neglect to train them themselves.

For Jay Cutler, the only man to dethrone former eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman, abdominal exercises were essential. Cutler trained them daily throughout his illustrious reign and remains the only bodybuilder in history to reclaim the coveted Mr. Olympia title in the men's Open category, which he did in 2009.

Jay Cutler: "The most overlooked and underrated part of your body is your abdominal muscles"

Throughout his career, Cutler has been dedicated to training his abs and understanding their harmony with posing. His main exercises for abdominal muscle training:

Leg raises in a sling
Two types of crunches
(crunches on a pulley with a rope, crunches on a machine)

"The most overlooked and under-trained body part will be abdominal training. Everyone knows I was a sucker for abdominal training. I always trained my abdominals at least every other day, especially when training for competition. There is a lot of posing involved in showing your abs. And of course, your definition has to be top notch, right?"

Cutler prefers the three exercises, although he adds that abdominal muscles won't be visible without a low body fat percentage. He also shared that it would be best to focus on more reps, ideally in the 15-20 rep range.

"Your body fat needs to be you know, eight, six percent or less to show abdominal definition. So, ideally, I like to do three exercises when training my abs.

Hanging leg raises, some kind of crunches, rope crunches, machine crunches, anything that really stimulates the abdominal muscles. Focus on more reps, 15-20 reps, but don't neglect the abdominal training," Jay Cutler shared his experience.
