How does Jay Cutler train at 51? The legend reveals his current split
Four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler is a name that resonates in the halls of gyms with reverence and admiration. Long after his competitive career has ended, he remains one of the most influential figures in the world of bodybuilding. He recently inspired thousands of fans with his "Fit for 50" transformation, where he showed that it's possible to stay in fantastic shape even after 50.
Cutler, who is known for his work ethic and intelligent approach to training, recently shared his current training plan. It's no longer about the brutal volumes and extremely heavy weights that took him to the top of Olympia. His current philosophy is different - train smart, for health and for feel, not for ego.
The new philosophy.
Jay himself stresses that his priority today is longevity and sustainability.
"I don't train for maximum weight anymore, I train for pump up," he let us hear in one of his podcasts.
This approach means focusing on perfect sensation in the muscle, controlled movement and achieving maximum blood flow (pump) in the area. The scale is a tool, not a goal. This shift not only protects his joints and tendons from injury, but also allows him to effectively stimulate the muscles even with lighter weights.
Jay Cutler's current training split (5+2)
Cutler's current plan is based on five training days and two rest days. The schedule is a combination of proven principles that work for him and allow him to target each muscle part with sufficient intensity.
His split looks like this:
- Day 1: Chest, Biceps, Calves
- Day 2: Back
- Day 3: Shoulders, Triceps
- Day 4: Legs (Quadriceps and Hamstrings)
- Day 5: Arms (Biceps and Triceps)
The two days of the week that work best for him are reserved for rest and recovery. Interestingly, he trains his arms twice a week - once in combination with push and pull areas and once in a separate, fully focused workout. This shows his desire to keep his arms full and bulky, which has always been his dominant area.
Meals and TRT - open access
In addition to training, Cutler speaks openly about other aspects of his lifestyle. His diet is no longer as strict as it was in the lead up to the Olympia, but it is still very disciplined and clean to support his training goals and overall health.
He also makes no secret of the fact that he uses testosterone replacement therapy(TRT). However, in his own words, he sees it as a tool to maintain quality of life, energy and vitality at his age, not as a means to build extreme muscle mass.
Jay Cutler proves that bodybuilding is not just a sport for the young in pursuit of medals. It is a lifestyle that can be adapted for every stage of life. His up-to-date approach to training is the perfect inspiration for anyone who wants to not only look great, but most importantly feel healthy, strong and full of energy regardless of age. His legacy thus goes beyond the four Sandow statues and becomes a guide to lifelong fitness.
