Frank Zane's wasp waist secret: 2 best exercises for the lower abdomen

The lower abdomen is the biggest nightmare for most people. The fat sticks to these areas like a tick and the muscles underneath seem to not want to respond to any training. But if anyone in the history of bodybuilding could turn this part into a work of art, it was three-time Mr. Olympia Frank Zane. The man who beat heavier opponents, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, not with brutal mass but with perfect symmetry and an incredibly narrow waist, shared his simple recipe.

Forget complicated machines and an endless series of shorteners. Zane's philosophy is straightforward and based on two basic exercises, high frequency and of course a clean diet.

Why does the lower abdomen hurt so much?

Frank Zane openly admits that the lower abdomen is stubborn. The way to it is not through occasional exercises at the end of your workout when you have no energy left. Zane recommends training your abs at least four times a week, ideally with every visit to the gym after that. The muscles of the midsection can take a lot of strain and need constant stimulus to begin to take shape.

Two exercises that make a difference

Zane's lower abdominal training doesn't rely on any modern fads. The whole magic lies in the perfect execution of two movements.

The first is the leg raise. Whether you're lying on the ground, on an incline bench, or hanging from the bars, the key to success is taking your hip flexors out of play. Most people make the mistake of just mindlessly lifting their legs up and down. Zane advises focusing on a slight pelvic tuck at the top of the movement. Only when you gently push your butt off the mat will you force the lower abdomen into maximum contraction. Then lower the legs slowly and under constant tension.

The second pillar is the pulling in of the knees in the vis. This exercise is great in that it engages the deep stabilization system in addition to the abdominals and requires a firm grip. But forget about the body rocking and leg swinging. If you swing with the exercise, the abdomen does almost no work. Hang from a trapeze bar, smoothly pull your knees as high as you can to your chest with an exhale, hold the movement for a second at the top, and then return your knees to the starting position in a controlled manner.

It's simply not possible without food

But Zane himself points out a harsh truth - you can do thousands of reps a day, but if you have a layer of fat on your belly, no one will see the muscles. During his best form, he relied solely on a low-carbohydrate diet to help keep subcutaneous fat to an absolute minimum.

At the same time, he warns against today's trend of extreme bulk. Gaining dozens of kilograms with the vision of muscle, he says, only leads to the body retaining unnecessary water and fat, which is then hard to get rid of. Quality mass is built gradually and cleanly. Similarly, he rejects the so-called cheating or sewing technique using the swing, which, according to him, completely spoils the aesthetic shape of the muscles.

Rather than looking for shortcuts, stick to Zane's tried-and-true recipe: train your abs often, focus on 100% technique on leg lifts, and watch your plate. The results won't be long in coming.
