Burger and fries do more harm than two burgers, research says
A study published in the journal Nutritional Metabolism by Bridget M. Hron shows that in terms of macronutrient ratios, it may be preferable to choose two burgers instead of one burger and fries.
Registered nutritional therapist Emily Field shares a similar view, noting that the higher protein, fat and carbohydrate intake from two cuts of meat can help stabilize blood sugar levels. This in turn helps to reduce energy spikes during the day and curb evening food cravings.
Instead of simply dividing meals into "healthy" and "unhealthy", this strategy encourages deeper reflection on how the individual components of a meal affect the overall nutritional balance. This enables people to make informed choices that promote stable energy and long-term health.
Why a double burger may be a nutritionally better choice than a classic burger and fries - in terms of macronutrients and energy impact:
1. More protein = more stable blood sugar levels
Two burgers means twice as much meat → therefore more protein and fat. These nutrients slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and help prevent blood sugar spikes that cause fatigue or hunger pangs during the day.
2. Fries = fast sugar spike, fast crash
French fries are made up mostly of fast carbs and fat from deep frying, but no protein. This leads to a rapid rise in blood sugar and subsequent crash - which increases feelings of fatigue and cravings for sweets or more food.
3. Better macronutrient ratio
- Two burgers = more protein, a moderate amount of fat and a controlled carbohydrate intake (from the buns).
- Burger + fries = less protein, lots of fat, and a high amount of simple carbs.
The protein:fat:carb ratio is more balanced in a double burger, which promotes satiety, muscle recovery and mental focus.
4. It's not about what's "healthy" but what's balanced
The main idea is not that burgers are healthy. The point is that when you compare two "unhealthy" choices, the one with more protein and fewer empty calories (like fries) may be more nutritionally beneficial. And that's not only good for athletes, but also for regular people who want more energy and fewer cravings for sweets during the day.
