Arnold Schwarzenegger reveals that plant-based protein powder offers the same muscle-building benefits as whey!

Maintaining a daily protein intake can be challenging, especially for those who refuse to consume animal products. Arnold Schwarzenegger understands these challenges, as he too has limited his meat consumption for the sake of his health and fitness. In a recent Arnold's Pump Club newsletter, Schwarzenegger compared the benefits of plant-based protein powder versus animal-based whey protein for building muscle.

Initially, studies suggested that plant-based protein alternatives were not as effective for building muscle mass as those derived from animals. In light of new research, however, Schwarzenegger explains that plant-based proteins can offer similar increases in muscle mass and strength due to their strong amino acid profile.

"Many used to believe that plant protein powder was inferior to animal protein powder. But it seems that the old research was wrong. A new study has found that plant protein powder increases muscle protein synthesis after training as much as whey protein.

Initially, whey protein contained more essential amino acids that promoted muscle growth and recovery, but in the last few years, plant protein alternatives have caught up. Whey protein was thought to be superior to plant protein because - per gram of protein - whey protein has more essential amino acids that aid muscle growth and recovery.

Combining multiple plant protein sources can create an amino acid profile similar to whey. For example, pea and rice protein is a common combination for plant-based strength."
