How to Overcome False Pain and Unlock Real Muscle Growth
For many years, it was assumed that people could estimate fairly accurately how many more repetitions they could perform with a given weight. Researchers decided to test this. In a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, participants were asked to choose a weight with which they believed they could perform exactly 10 repetitions to failure (known as 10RM).
Once they had loaded the weight, the researchers began shouting at them and forcing them to keep going until the barbell literally fell from their hands. The result? Most of the participants managed to complete 15 to 18 repetitions with this “10-rep max”!
It turns out that the average gym-goer ends their set when they still have 3 to 5 full repetitions left in the tank. And that’s a huge problem. Why? Because muscle hypertrophy (muscle growth) only kicks in when you put the muscle under extreme mechanical tension. Those first 8 reps are essentially just a warm-up. The real “growth stimuli” come during those last two reps, when the barbell slows down and you have to fight for every centimeter. If you put the bar down sooner, you’ve just done what’s called “junk volume”—pointless work that tires you out but doesn’t force your muscles to grow.
Brain vs. Muscle: Why Do We Give Up So Soon?
Why can’t we push ourselves to train harder on our own? Evolution and our body’s chemistry are to blame. When you exercise, lactate (lactic acid) and hydrogen ions begin to accumulate in your muscles as byproducts. The environment inside the muscle becomes extremely acidic.
That’s when that familiar, brutal burning sensation kicks in. And your central nervous system (CNS) hates pain. As soon as a muscle starts to burn, your brain sounds the alarm. It sends you a signal that the muscle is failing and that you must stop immediately, or you’ll get hurt. The trick is that the muscle fibers are far from destroyed. What you’re experiencing isn’t a mechanical failure of the muscle, but a neurological failure of the brain. You’ve given up in your head, not in your muscles.

Break through biological limits and force your body to grow
Learning to train close to true failure (known as RIR 0-1, or 0 to 1 repetition in reserve) is a skill you build over years. It requires tremendous mental resilience. Fortunately, we live in an age where we can “hack” our body’s chemistry a bit and help it endure this burning discomfort for longer.
Experienced athletes don’t rely solely on willpower. Here are two proven and scientifically backed tips that will actually help you unlock those most important reps at the end of a set:
- Pre-Workout with Beta-Alanine: A Shield Against Lactic Acid If an unbearable burning sensation in your muscles always stops you from doing higher rep counts, you need beta-alanine. This substance (which is the foundation of high-quality pre-workout supplements like GymSupps XPre Workout) acts as a “buffer” in the body. Simply put: it absorbs that burning lactic acid from your muscles. This delays the moment when your brain tells you “enough,” allowing you to squeeze out exactly those 3–4 extra growth reps that you would otherwise give up on.
- High-Quality Creatine Monohydrate: Energy for the Final Seconds When you reach the last few reps in a set and the barbell comes to a complete stop, your muscles have just run out of ATP (immediate cellular energy). This is where creatine comes in. It acts like an external power bank. In a fraction of a second, it delivers a fresh dose of ATP to your muscles, allowing you to push the barbell all the way to the end of the rep. Together with beta-alanine, it’s the best legal combo for delaying muscle failure.
Stop just working up a sweat at the gym for fun. Leave your ego at the door, but bring resilience to your workout. Equip yourself wisely and learn to tell the difference between when it just “hurts” and when a muscle truly fails mechanically. That’s where the real results begin.

Illusion vs. Reality: How Can You Tell What a Real Failure Is?
| YOUR APPROACH AT THE GYM | HOW IT LOOKS IN PRACTICE | YOUR SMART MOVE |
|---|---|---|
| A Comfortable Workout (RIR 4 or higher) |
You do 10 reps because that’s what’s written in your plan. The barbell flies up and down at the same speed. You finish the set with a smile and go off to chat. | Waste of time: This is classic “junk volume.” Your body gets a little tired, you burn a few calories, but your muscles have absolutely no reason to adapt and grow. You need to add weight. |
| The Illusion of Failure (RIR 2–3) |
By the eighth rep, it starts to sting. Lactate builds up, and your brain signals discomfort. On the tenth rep, you set the barbell down with a sigh. | Endure the pain: This is where the workout really begins! You gave up in your head, not in your muscles. Use supplements like beta-alanine to help you, grit your teeth, and squeeze out another 2–3 clean reps. |
| True failure (RIR 0) |
The penultimate rep takes three seconds. On the last one, you push the barbell with all your strength; your face contorts, but the bar won’t budge another millimeter. | Growth stimulus: You did it. You’ve exhausted every muscle fiber. Your body has received a clear signal that, to survive next time, your muscles must grow bigger and stronger. This is what growth looks like. |
Your next step: Stop training your brain and start training your muscles
Ingrained habits and a subconscious fear of pain are the greatest enemies of your growth. The vast majority of gym-goers spend years lifting weights and complete tens of thousands of sets without ever once experiencing absolute, true muscle failure. Ending a set the moment the first intense burning sensation sets in and your brain starts to panic means voluntarily robbing yourself of the very results you came to the gym for.
When was the last time you pushed yourself to the absolute limit of your physical strength? When did you do a rep that lasted an endless three seconds and drained all your mental energy, without having to cheat with your whole body? How many times have you put the barbell back on the rack, even though—with an imaginary gun to your head—you could have lifted it just two more times?
Today, leave that false sense of failure in the locker room. When you get to the point on the bench press or during squats where your muscles start to burn and your nervous system tells you to put the bar down immediately, grit your teeth and squeeze out three more clean reps.
