Do you work out in the evening? According to Arnold, you may be unknowingly destroying your recovery
While in his glory days he lifted iron whenever necessary, today the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger focuses primarily on longevity and overall health. In his recent newsletter, he looked at a common dilemma for many athletes: is exercising late at night killing your sleep?
It's been nearly 50 years since Arnold won his seventh Mr. Olympia title. His priorities have shifted since then - from pure muscle building to mobility, heart health and quality recovery. And it was recovery that was the topic of his Arnold's Pump Club newsletter, where he addressed an issue familiar to just about everyone who goes to work and to the gym in the evening.
Arnold started the topic very aptly:
"Do evening workouts steal your sleep? If you've ever ruined a hard workout only to lie in bed afterwards and stare at the ceiling, you're not kidding yourself. It's not just in your head."
It's not just about time, it's about intensity
Schwarzenegger points out that according to new studies, the problem isn't the fact that you exercise in the evening, but how hard you exercise.
The study he refers to analyzed data from nearly 4 million nights from 15,000 active people. The results showed a clear trend:
- Hard workouts within 4 hours of bedtime: They can delay falling asleep, shorten sleep time, and tax the nervous system.
- Light to moderate workouts: usually do not have a negative effect on sleep, even in the evening.
Why doesn't the body "shut down"?
If you complete an intense workout less than 2 hours before bedtime, data shows that you fall asleep an average of 36 minutes later and your HRV (heart rate variability - a key indicator of recovery) drops by 14%.
Arnold explains the physiological reason why this happens:
"Scientists believe that high-load exercise keeps the body in so-called 'fight mode' for longer. This means increased core body temperature, higher heart rate and a nervous system that simply hasn't had time to switch back to rest."
Arnold's advice: Be strategic
The legendary bodybuilder understands that for many people, the evening is the only time they get to the gym. There's no need to hang your head, you just need to plan your workout smartly.
The recommendations are as follows:
- Try to directyour heaviest workouts to earlier in the day if you can.
- If you must work out in the evening, choose lighter weights or moderate intensity.
- As long as you finish your workout at least 4 hours before bedtime, even high intensity should not have a negative effect on sleep.
Although legends like Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler trained at night and won titles, it is crucial for the general population and long-term health that training does not interfere with recovery. As Arnold himself concludes:
"Small adjustments can protect your sleep and how you feel tomorrow without having to give up your evening routine."
