3 Tips for a Well-Defined Six-Pack from Men’s Physique Champion Ryan Terry
Are you one of those people who dream of having a perfect six-pack, but that last layer of belly fat just won't let go? Ryan Terry, a star of the Men’s Physique division and owner of one of the most chiseled physiques in the IFBB Pro League, recently shared his secret. While preparing to defend his title at Mr. Olympia, he revealed three basic rules for burning fat and achieving your dream six-pack.
Forget endless sets of sit-ups and read what actually works.
1. Focus on overall fat loss, not just one body part
Ryan points out one of the most common myths in fitness: spot reduction doesn’t exist. “Thousands of crunches won’t reveal your abs if they’re still covered by a layer of body fat,” he explains.
Your body decides for itself where it will draw fat from first. For many men, the lower abdomen and lower back are the very last places where fat disappears. So the real goal isn’t to train your abs harder, but to reduce your overall body fat percentage.
How do you do that? Ryan advises avoiding drastic diets. These often lead to muscle loss and the unpleasant yo-yo effect. Instead, he recommends following a moderate calorie deficit. “A slow and steady pace of weight loss may not be as exciting, but it works.”
2. Build muscle with a protein-rich diet
If you want to burn fat more effectively, you also need to focus on building muscle mass—and not just in your midsection. Muscles are metabolically active tissue, which means that the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn even at rest.
Ryan Terry places a huge emphasis on high protein intake. He also advises focusing your workouts on full-body development. A broader back, well-developed shoulders, and strong legs will not only improve the overall aesthetics and proportions of your physique but, more importantly, significantly boost the fat-burning process.

3. Manage your sleep and stress. And above all—be consistent
What you do outside the gym is just as important as the workout itself. According to Terry, sleep and stress management play an absolutely crucial role in weight loss. “If you don’t have your stress and sleep under control, everything becomes much harder,” warns the champion.
The most important thing to remember? Give it time. The journey to a six-pack takes months, not weeks. According to Ryan, people with perfect abs don’t use any secret tricks—they simply stay consistent exactly when others give up and have to start from scratch.
