The key to longevity according to Dorian Yates

After a successful and legendary career that saw him win six Mr. Olympia titles, Dorian Yates has turned his focus to overall health and longevity. In a recent Instagram post, he shared why he incorporated Pilates into his weekly workout regimen, and how the method helps him maintain fitness, increase flexibility, and prevent injuries.

Transitioning from competitive training to longevity

Recognized as one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, Dorian Yates, now 62 years old, emphasizes maintaining a healthy and functional body. Despite having excelled at extremely challenging training and winning titles in the past, he now focuses on injury prevention and overall well-being. After undergoing a total right hip replacement, he has become even more determined to find new ways to stay active and healthy.

Pilates - the key to better mobility and injury prevention

Pilates has become an essential part of Yates' training plan. As he himself admits,

"I do an individual class once a week that lasts about an hour - and that's ideal."

With regular exercise, he realizes he is more flexible today than he was thirty years ago. This practice not only helps him maintain mobility, but also reduces the risk of future injuries.

"When I discovered Pilates, I found that it greatly improved my overall mobility and flexibility," says Yates.

"If you can do anything to protect yourself, do it."

By taking this approach, he's trying to prevent the loss of muscle gains he's made and ensure his long-term ability to compete or be active in other sports.

From ridicule to recognition - a story of changing attitudes

In the past, Yates has made fun of his colleague Jay Cutler for practicing Pilates. Today, however, he admits that the method "makes it easier for me to maintain flexibility and protect myself from injury."

"I saw Jay Cutler doing Pilates, and I thought, 'What the hell are you doing? That's a woman's thing... But eventually I found out how useful it is,"

Yates adds. This example illustrates how opinions can change when a person tries out the benefits of a new training method for themselves.

Redefining training

Dorian Yates also points out that training today is no longer just about lifting heavy weights.

"Exercise for me now includes other activities such as hiking, yoga, pilates and of course lighter weight work in the gym - the love of iron never completely fades away."

His goal is to stay fit, healthy and functional, even if age brings some limitations. Dorian Yates' story shows that age is just a number and that the right exercise method can contribute significantly to longevity and quality of life. By incorporating Pilates into his regimen, he proves that injury prevention and maintaining mobility can be key not only for athletes, but for anyone who wants to avoid the problems associated with aging. His experience is an inspiration to anyone looking for new ways to stay active and healthy.
