What is cellulite?
The technical name for this disease is "gynoid lipodystrophy", and it is manifested by the appearance of unsightly bumps on the skin, which then resembles orange peel. These bumps are caused by changes in the structure of the fat cells and connective tissue under the skin. These changes cause the fat cells to enlarge quite significantly and to 'push' them into the connective tissue under the skin. In addition, the vascular supply to the cellulite-affected areas is also altered, so that more fluid accumulates in the tissues, all of which are factors that give the skin its bumpy appearance. As we have already mentioned, this cosmetic ailment really only affects women, which is due to the difference in the arrangement of fat cells between the sexes, but we will talk about that later. The most common areas of appearance are the thighs, abdomen and buttocks.

What are the main causes of cellulite?
The causes of this disease are difficult to define precisely, because very often there is a combination of several factors. However, hormones, gender and lifestyle are probably the biggest contributors to the appearance of this cosmetic beauty defect . Let's elaborate on each factor in a little more detail.
Hormones
The formation of cellulite is, as we have already discussed, conditioned by changes in the size and structure of the fat cell arrangement, and therefore it is thought that hormones that affect the breakdown and storage of fat (such as insulin) may play a role in the formation and development of cellulite. And since virtually only women suffer from cellulite, it is assumed that estrogen, as a female sex hormone, also influences its development to some extent.
Gender
It's unfair, but cellulite predominantly affects women. One reason for this is the differences in the arrangement of connective tissue and fat cells in the subcutaneous tissue according to gender. Women generally have more fat cells, which are also arranged vertically, while men have fewer fat cells and in a horizontal arrangement, so they actually "lie on top of each other", making the fat and the skin on top of it smooth and elastic in the male population. Therefore, in women, fat cells are much more likely to "puncture" the connective tissue as they enlarge, creating bumps on the skin that look like that "orange peel". The characteristics of the fat cell arrangement and their quantity go a long way to explaining why cellulite is predominantly a problem in the female population and is rather rare in men.

Lifestyle and diet
Another reason for cellulite is the accumulation of fluid in the intercellular spaces. So if your lifestyle is rather inactive, sedentary, this can also be a stimulus for the development of cellulite. In fact, scientists hypothesize that changes in blood circulation may be behind the accumulation of fluid in the tissues in areas affected by cellulite.
Cellulite is also caused by a large amount of fat, which is very often the result of improper eating habits. Diets that contain too much salt or trans-fats, such as fasfoods, fried foods or sweets, generally lead to weight gain or fat gain, which potentially increases the risk of worsening cellulite symptoms. However, as we have already discussed, cellulite affects most women and so this is more of a contributory factor to its development.
Can cellulite be treated at all and if so, how?
First of all, let's say one thing. Indeed, almost every woman has cellulite, and it sounds like it's less of a problem than you might think. Yes, really. It's practically a perfectly normal phenomenon, which is why cellulite is more of a psychological problem due to its unaesthetic nature, rather than being somehow medically serious. Unfortunately, nowadays there is no known guaranteed method that can completely eliminate it, but on the other hand, there are many ways that can alleviate its manifestations.
So how to fight cellulite?
Healthy lifestyle and sport
You may find this advice old-fashioned, as it is recommended to treat practically everything, but a healthy diet and plenty of exercise is also a very effective way to fight cellulite . A combination of exercise and a healthy diet can burn fat and firm up at the same time, which can lead to a reduction in the visibility of cellulite. The ideal is to choose a combination of strength and cardio training. For strength training, choose exercises that are designed to firm the buttocks, hamstrings and thighs, such as lunges, squats, box jumps and hit thrusts.

In terms of diet, it is advisable to limit excessive intake of processed foods, salt and, in particular, refined sugars, which are very often responsible for the formation of fat deposits which, as we have already seen, lead to the worsening of the symptoms and visibility of cellulite. In addition, the consumption of such foods can lead to the accumulation of toxins and pollutants that also feed cellulite. What we must not forget in any case is a sufficient drinking regime, which makes our skin hydrated and therefore more elastic. It is also a known fact that water washes away harmful substances from the body. Drinking pure water or herbal teas is ideal.
Manipulation techniques
In addition to following a healthy lifestyle, you can also try some of the manipulative techniques, such as massage or lymphatic drainage, which can help you get rid of excess fluid in the tissues and ensure better blood circulation, which can lead to a reduction in the symptoms of cellulite. You can also focus on other techniques related to supporting the functions of the lymphatic system, which is essential for cleansing our body.
Professional help
Another option to fight cellulite that you can use is one of the medical or other procedures that require a specialist to perform. This means laser treatment , radiofrequency treatment, shock waves, or similar techniques.
What else can be used to reduce the symptoms of cellulite?
You can also use some dietary supplements, such as ginkgo biloba or Asian umbilical cordial. A constrast shower can also help. In addition, wearing compression stockings is recommended as a treatment option (especially because they can alleviate the symptoms of fluid retention, which include cellulite). Collagen injections may be another option, however, all of these treatments have no conclusive effect on reducing the symptoms of cellulite in the long term.

And what about all those various ointments and creams?
If you have read the opening lines carefully, you already know that cellulite is caused by changes in the cell structure, and it is logical that creams or ointments, even if they are expensive and promise the best results, simply cannot return the cells to their original position. There is really no way that an ointment can penetrate the skin and change the structure of the cell arrangement. Yes, ointments and creams can externally moisturize and nourish the skin, so maybe cellulite won't be as pronounced, but they are certainly not the key to eliminating it. If you are going to invest in some expensive product that promises miracles, save your wallet from unnecessary expenses.
What to take away from the article?
Cellulite is actually not an uncommon or serious problem - the vast majority of women suffer from it. Moreover, it is only a minor cosmetic blemish that virtually no one addresses (only tabloids on celebrities in swimsuits :))) so you don't have to worry about it. It is unfortunately true that cellulite is very difficult to get rid of, yet there are many techniques that alleviate its manifestations, and very effectively. A combination of healthy eating and an active lifestyle seems to be the best way.
