Apple cider vinegar will offer you many great benefits!

Although vinegar has been one of the raw materials used for decades, it is only recently experiencing a huge boom, when it has become popular among healthy lifestyle enthusiasts and athletes. Why? Because of its promised benefits, which include lower cholesterol and weight loss. But does it really work, or is it just more nonsense? In this article, we'll take a closer look at apple cider vinegar, which has become an indispensable part of the day for many people.

What is apple cider vinegar?

Generally speaking, vinegar is a pungent-tasting product formed by the oxidation of liquids containing ethanol. In the presence of specific bacteria and oxygen, the aforementioned ethanol is oxidized to acetic acid. Depending on the liquid from which the ethanol then comes, there are different types of vinegar - some people prefer wine vinegar (whether from white or red wine), others prefer fermented spirit vinegar. Rice vinegar can be used for sushi, and balsamic vinegar can be used in salads for a change. Apple cider vinegar is then used to make apple cider vinegar, which can be used in the kitchen, for cleaning, but also for skin and hair.

What are the benefits of apple cider vinegar?

You can read about apple cider vinegar's many purported benefits, including its positive impact on gut health, overall immunity and improved weight loss. But what do the scientific studies say?

Does it improve insulin sensitivity?

While there is a lot of talk about the potential impact on optimising blood sugar levels, the truth is that the amount of research that has been done is certainly not staggering and most of it only works with very limited samples of people who also often suffer from diabetes or insulin resistance. A typical example of this is a study published in the Diabetes Journal, which found that apple cider vinegar, together with a carbohydrate-rich diet, can improve insulin sensitivity in people with the aforementioned complications by 19 to 34%. The studies conducted on healthy people work with small samples and are more than 20 years old, but show a reduction in blood sugar levels of up to 31.4% after eating carbohydrates. However, it would be ideal to have more scientific research on this topic.

Can it help with weight loss?

If you want to lose weight, it is not a bad idea to use apple cider vinegar during the day. This says another often presented benefit that scientific studies confirm, but still not so clearly. For example, an older study looks promising, which came up with the fact that obese individuals taking a pint of water with 15 or 30 ml of vinegar daily showed a more significant reduction in weight, BMI and serum triglycerides. But so far, there is a lack of further research to build on this idea and confirm this effect. In any case, several different studies have confirmed that apple cider vinegar can slightly reduce appetite - specifically, it seems that taking vinegar with a carbohydrate-rich meal helped reduce the intake of study participants by as much as 200 to 275 kcal. Again, while there is a lack of studies looking at the long-term effect of vinegar on weight loss, it looks promising, and given that vinegar itself contains only minimal calories, using it won't do any harm in this regard.

Can it be a good cancer preventative?

From time to time, you may also come across claims that apple cider vinegar is a good cancer preventative. There have even been studies in the past showing positive results when cancer cells are exposed to vinegar. However, experts logically point out that in practice, the procedure from these studies is impossible to apply because it is not possible to introduce, for example, an infusion of vinegar into the body of cancer patients. Therefore, the potentially preventive effects of vinegar on cancer cells may look attractive in the context of the results of the studies, but in practice they do not represent a breakthrough in treatment.

Can it kill harmful bacteria?

On the contrary, the claim that vinegar can slow down the growth of certain bacteria such as E.Coli is quite true. However, scientific studies are also looking at the effect on other bacteria such as golden staphylococcus or the yeast candida albicans. In fact, it is because of this property that vinegar has been used for many years as a food preservative - and you can still use this benefit in the kitchen today.

Is vinegar a miracle you can't do without?

While apple cider vinegar may indeed have a variety of different health benefits, it's certainly not some ingredient you can't function without. Once you use apple cider vinegar a lot, there can be negative effects, with studies done showing delayed elimination and overall digestive issues, damage to tooth enamel, and it can also cause skin irritation in more sensitive individuals who apply apple cider vinegar to their body. So you can try incorporating it into your diet, but definitely don't expect it to turn your life around. In fact, without a comprehensive lifestyle adjustment, apple cider vinegar probably won't help you lose weight or improve your insulin sensitivity.

How to add apple cider vinegar to your diet?

They say that too much of anything is bad for you, and in the case of apple cider vinegar, this is certainly true. It is probably ideal to use it occasionally in the kitchen, whether in various dressings, sauces or salads, for example. If you'd like to use it on a regular basis, it's a good idea to start at 15 ml, roughly equivalent to one teaspoon, and increase to 30 ml if necessary after seeing how you react to the vinegar. However, expert sources advise not to exceed this dose. With regard to dental health, mixing it in water rather than drinking it directly from a spoon is ideal. You can also try VitaHarmony Apple Cider Vinegar, which comes in capsules, making it easier to take and can be followed anywhere outside the home.
