Anatomy of the human body - musculus serratus anterior

Often we see that an article mentions a muscle, but not every reader knows what muscle it is. Based on this, we have decided to create a series of articles in which we will discuss the basic anatomy of the human body and introduce the muscles in more detail. Among other things, we will also show you which exercises to use to exercise a given muscle part correctly and, conversely, which exercises to avoid. The first two parts we decided to devote to perhaps the most famous muscles of all - triceps and biceps.

Today we would like to introduce you to a muscle that not many people know about, but is very important for stabilizing the shoulders and the position of the shoulder blades. That muscle is the musculus serratus anterior, or anterior pilus muscle.

Pilovitý sval přední

The serratus anterior is a fan-shaped muscle on the side of the chest. Its main part lies well below the scapula and pectoral muscles. This muscle starts at the 1st-9th rib and attaches to the inside of the scapula. It helps to rotate the scapula when the shoulder joint is flexed above 90°. Its main function is to press the scapula against the chest. So if you are having problems with your shoulder blades being out of alignment, try to diagnose if the sawtooth muscle anterior is causing the problem.

This muscle is very often overworked if you are not doing push-ups or even bench press for example. In the Athletic Body, it can be fairly easy to spot.

Exercises to strengthen the anterior psoas muscle:

One of the basic exercises to engage the aforementioned anterior psoas muscle is the pullover, which is primarily designed to develop the back muscles.

Find out how to technically perform this exercise in the video below.

Other exercises for the development of the serrated muscle of the front:

An exercise that will encourage the development of this muscle can be, for example, a simple wood chopping.

What to avoid when exercising the front sawtooth muscle:

This is what we asked our supertrainer again.

Unfortunately, you can't train the front sawtooth muscle on its own and isolate it. You can't isolate it and work it alone. It is therefore impossible to give a specific answer, it depends mainly on the execution of the exercises.
