Only 5% of people in the world can do an honest bend! are you among the elite or do you have a long way to go?

Are you one of those people who grab the bar and without kicking, swinging or "twitching" pull themselves up with their chin over the bar? If so, a huge RESPECT. You've just joined the ranks of the world's narrow elite. In fact, for the vast majority of adults, that standard is completely unattainable.

Let's take a look at why the simple push-up is such a brutal test of fitness and why it's rightfully called the king of upper body exercises.

Why is the push-up so rare?

Reaching this plateau isn't just about having "wings" like an airport. It's a comprehensive test of your physical shell. Because the hunch is an uncompromising indicator of your strength to bodyweight ratio.

You can be huge and lift nonsense on the deadlift, but if you don't pull your mass against gravity, you'll burn up on the trapeze. Conversely, you can be skinny, but if you don't have enough muscle power, you won't get up.

What does the hunch test?

  • Brute relative strength: You have to control 100% of your weight.
  • Functional grip strength: If you can't hold on, you can't pull.
  • Full-body coordination: A solidified core is a must so you don't wave like a flag.

Pulley vs. Trapeze: Why isn't pulling up enough?

Many people live in the fallacy of, "I'm pulling 80 pounds on the pulley, so I'll do the snatch too." Fallacy. While the overhead pulley pull-up is a great hypertrophy exercise, an honest push-up separates the wheat from the chaff.

On the pulley, you're held by a footrest, you're stabilized by the machine, and the path of motion is often fixed. On the trapeze? There's just you and gravity. You have to stabilize your body in space, engage your deep stabilization system, and coordinate your muscles to work in perfect synergy. That's why the hunch is in a category of functional training that most "machines" can only dream of.

Did you know... Even in police or special forces recruitments around the world, hunches are often the biggest "sieve" that even otherwise fit individuals fall through?

Definition of "Honest" bend

To be fair, we need to define what the mythical hunch actually is. Those who kick up, use momentum (kipping), or do half the range of motion do not count in the 5%.

A strict hunch looks like this:

  1. Start: You are hanging on the trapeze, arms fully extended (dead hang).
  2. Move: Smooth upward pull without the aid of your legs.
  3. Top: The chin gets clearly above the level of the bar.
  4. Return: Controlled lowering back to extended arms.

If you can do this, you're literally in the selection club!

Be proud of yourself!

This is not just "another exercise" in your training plan. This is a demonstration of strength and dominance over your own body. If you're in the top five percent, be proud of it. If you're just starting out, don't give up. Fighting for that first push-up is one of the best goals you can set for yourself in fitness.

What is your current max number of push-ups? Can you do five, ten, or are you still fighting for that first one? Show off in the comments and motivate others!
