Protein shortage looms! Who's to blame?
Very often we encounter the opinion that our customers think that the price of whey protein is influenced by the final seller, i.e. us from Kulturistika.com. However, if we think about the situation that is currently occurring in the world, it must be obvious that the price increases must come from somewhere other than the final sellers.
Since we have a really good relationship with Prom-In, the company where Pavel Samek works, we can provide you with immediate information about the price of nutritional supplements, specifically whey protein.
During the last year (13.6.2021) 2kg of Prom-In CFM Pure Performance ( formerly under the name CFM Evolution) cost 1056Kč on average (according to data from Heureka.cz) and currently it can be bought for 1355Kč on average. So it will disappear from our bank account by 299CZK more than almost half a year ago.

Compared to a common food such as eggs, whey protein is still doing well. While last March, according to statistics, one egg in the store cost 2.55 CZK/piece, this year its price has risen to 4.99 CZK/piece, roughly double!
In the following we will try to explain why whey protein is becoming more expensive.
The first problem with the price rise lies with the producers themselves. The production process (filtration and spray drying) is very energy intensive and, given the rising energy prices, it must be obvious to us that the price must rise, and by several times. However, due to the astronomically expensive operation, some of the companies producing whey protein have ceased production, which logically has also increased the price...
Another person who influences the final price of protein is the producers of the final protein themselves, such as Prom-in. They too have to put a lot of energy into the production process. For example, Pavel Samek told us that if they were currently selling protein at the original price, they would not be able to cover the cost of production with this amount.

Pavel also explained to us that during the covida pandemic, whey protein became more expensive because of the lack of sales of cheese, which led to a reduction in protein production. Cheese was not marketable because of the closed restaurants. It may seem paradoxical, but it is true. But the situation has changed completely. We have learned from behind-the-scenes information that whey protein is currently being purchased on roughly the following basis:
"I'll sell you a truckload of whey protein at such and such a price, you have ten minutes to think about it, if you don't want it, I'll sell it to someone else at a higher price."
It is clear that not only consumers are in a difficult situation, but also distributors, who have to constantly balance on thin ice and improvise. Paul even has a hunch that there could be a whey protein shortage at the end of this year that might not be available to smaller companies at all. According to inside information, Prom-in has enough stock to prevent such shortages, so customers don't have to worry about this domestic company stopping supplying its excellent proteins. But what about smaller companies? Nobody knows...
Across the pond in the USA, for example, they are dealing with an amino acid shortage and that's why the price of PRE Work supplements there has gone up by 50% or more! Can you imagine that you would now pay, for example, for 750g of Prom-in Progressive PRE 1350Kč from the current 899Kč?

So if anyone thinks that we, the end sellers, are influencing the price increase, it must be clear to them after reading this article that the price increase of whey protein starts elsewhere and we just have to deal with this fact and adapt to the market.
However, in spite of the constant increase in the price of whey proteins, we try to prepare luxury promotions for you on our e-shop Kulturistika.com, which we arrange with the protein manufacturers themselves. We don't always succeed, but every week we have a different promotion ready for you to save money.
What's your opinion on whey protein pricing? Do you think proteins will get more expensive or will the current price be maintained? Leave us your comment!
