Maximum muscle growth? "It's not just about protein," says Arnold

Everyone at the gym repeats it like a mantra: "You need protein to grow muscle," but what if seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger tells you that you're missing the other, equally important half of the equation? The bodybuilding icon recently reminded us of a fundamental principle that many forget - without enough carbs, you're letting your potential for growth lie fallow.

Carbohydrates.

Arnold likens protein to bricks and carbohydrates to a bunch of workers who take those bricks and build a house out of them. You can have a pile of the best quality bricks (protein), but if you don't have anyone to process them, you're left with a pile of material. And that's exactly what carbohydrates do in your body.

How does it work? Consuming carbohydrates triggers the release of insulin. This hormone is often unfairly demonized, but it's absolutely crucial for building muscle. Insulin acts as a signal that tells the body, "We have enough energy, it's time to build!" thus instructing the anabolic (growth) processes to start.

Scientifically backed up

Arnold also backs up the science. He mentions a study where one group of athletes increased protein intake only, while the other group increased total caloric intake, primarily from carbohydrates. The result? The group with the higher carbohydrate intake gained significantly more muscle mass.

This is because carbohydrates not only "command" the body to build muscle, but also replenish glycogen stores in the muscles. This is your primary fuel for intense training. If your body doesn't get enough energy from carbohydrates, it will start to take it from other sources - and unfortunately, often from valuable protein that it would otherwise use to repair and grow muscle fibers.

How to put it into practice?

If your goal is maximum muscle growth, it's not enough to just track grams of protein. You need to ensure that you have enough energy for the entire process.

  1. Increase your caloric intake: To grow muscle, you need to be in a caloric surplus.
  2. Add quality carbs: Focus on sources like rice, potatoes, oatmeal or fruit.
  3. Timing is important: Carbohydrates are especially helpful before and after training, when they provide energy and kick-start recovery.
  4. Maintain a high protein intake: Carbohydrates do not replace protein, but complement it. Keep your protein intake at optimal levels and add plenty of energy from carbohydrates.

Don't be fooled by myths. If you're serious about building muscle, take the advice of a legend. Give your muscles not only the building materials, but also the energy and workers they need to grow. Add carbs and watch your efforts finally yield maximum results.
