Why is the bench press the most dangerous exercise in the gym?
The squat can send you to the ground and the deadlift can "blow up" your back, but with both of these exercises you can simply drop the barbell at the critical moment. The bench press does not have this advantage. Once you're lying on your back and holding a massive weight over your neck or chest, there's nowhere to move in case of muscle failure. It's this biomechanical trap that makes it sovereignly the most dangerous exercise.
Frightening data: 70% of all serious accidents
This is not scaremongering, but hard facts backed by research. Experts have found that 60% to 70% of all serious accidents related to strength training happen on the bench press. Moreover, the vast majority of these incidents have a common denominator: the exerciser was training alone or attempting maximum weight without proper safety restraints.
A study published in the respected Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (2010) confirmed that a staggering two-thirds of all documented gym emergencies were associated with bench pressing while training unsupervised. Data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) clearly mirrors these findings - the bench press dominates serious injury statistics in both home and commercial gyms.

Disaster scenario: What are you doing wrong?
When you analyze most accidents, you'll find that the same pattern of mistakes is almost always repeated:
- Too big an ego: Loading a weight that the exerciser has no control over.
- Absence of a spotter: Exercising to failure without someone to catch the barbell in time.
- Ignoring safety features: shoulders and cage stops are either set too low or missing entirely.
- Fatal mistake with the locks: Using the locks (caps) on the ends of the axle. If you are exercising alone and the barbell overwhelms you, without the lockouts you can tilt it to the side and let the discs slide off the axle. If you lock the axle, this escape route disappears.
Conclusion: a car is not worth living
Experts agree on one thing: if you're going to do a heavy bench press, never do it alone. If for some reason you're training in an empty gym, using a weight cage with adequately set safety stops is an absolute must. Strength is built through smart and thoughtful training, not through unnecessary gambling. Stop playing Russian roulette in the gym and always secure a spotter.
