Just one working series is enough? The Shocking Truth About Building Muscle
Maybe you know it too: you spend an hour and a half in the gym, do four or five sets of each exercise, and go home feeling like the more you do, the bigger your muscles will get. But what if it's different? What if you've been robbing yourself of time and recovery all this time?
With the advent of trends like "High Intensity Training" or "Top Set", the fitness community has split into two irreconcilable camps. One claims that without high volume, your muscles just don't "count", while the other swears by the notion that it only takes one single set to total failure. Let's take a look at what the current science says, what the practice in the gym confirms, and what the actual reality behind building hypertrophy with minimal sets is.

Here are three short, punchy tips that can't be missed to make that "one series" make sense:
Intensity must be absolute
If you're only doing one series, forget about the reserve. It must be a strict technical failure - that is, the point at which you are no longer able to do another rep with proper technique. One set "at ease" will not build muscle.
Don't confuse a warm-up with a work set
Many people make the mistake of jumping straight to heavy weight. That "one and only" series must be preceded by 2-3 pyramids (warm-up sets), which will prepare the CNS and joints, but will not fatigue the muscle enough to affect the main performance.
The key is progressive overload
At low volume, every extra pound or rep is critical. You need to keep an accurate training log. If you're not moving with strength on that one set, the volume is too low and the muscles have no reason to grow.
