Tips on how to cope with muscle imbalances

  1. Identify problem areas: have a movement analysis performed by a professional (physiotherapist, trainer) to identify weak and overloaded muscle groups. Use a mirror or video to analyse your posture yourself.
  2. Stretch overstretched muscles: focus on regular stretching of muscles that are shortened or overstretched. For example, if your pectoral muscles are overstretched, opening them up with stretching exercises helps.
  3. Strengthen weakened muscles: Weaker muscle groups require special strengthening exercises. For example, if you have weak gluteal muscles, incorporate hip thrusts, squats or bridges into your workout.
  4. Focus on stabilisation exercises: exercises for the deep stabilisation system (core) help to compensate for imbalances throughout the body. The plank, bird dog or dead bug are great exercises to strengthen the middle of the body.
  5. Incorporate unilateral exercises: practicing one side of the body at a time (e.g. lunges, one-arm push-ups or pull-ups) helps balance strength and stability between the left and right sides.
