Results Arnold Strongman Classic 2022 | Martins Licis took first place!

Last weekend, Columbus, North America, was the venue for the 34th edition of the prestigious Arnold Classic, where ten strongmen showed up. The Arnold Strongman Classic was not held last year due to Covid-19. The last competition was the 2020 ASC, where Hafthor Bjornsson won. However, he left the sport not long after his infamous 501 kg (1104.5 lb) deadlift. Hafthor is currently preparing for his boxing match against Eddie Hall, scheduled for March 19 in Dubai.

First day - Disciplines

Max Squat

The first discipline that started the Arnold Strongman Classic was the max squats. This discipline was dominated by the trio of JF Caron, Rob Kearney and Martins Licis. The bar was set at nearly 1000 pounds and it was Caron who took home first place. After Licis squatted 956lb on his third attempt, Kearney decided to load up the barbell with 5lb more with which he eventually managed to produce a valid attempt. That's when Caron decided to squat even more weight and on his final attempt he completed a squat of 966lbs to claim first place.

  • First place: JF Caron - 966 lbs
  • Second place: Rob Kearney - 961 lbs
  • Third place: Martins Licis - 956 lbs

Monster Dumbbell Press

In this discipline, the strongmen were tasked with lifting a 275 lbs. single-arm dumbbell off the ground above their heads as many times as possible within a ninety-second time frame.

The best performer in this discipline was Oleksii Novikov from Ukraine, who managed to lift the one-arm dumbbell seven times with this weight in the time limit! Kearney managed to take second place when he got the barbell over his head four times, beating three other competitors - Luke Stoltman, Evgeniy Markov and Martins Licis who shared third place with three reps.

  • Oleksii Novikov - 7 reps
  • Second place: Rob Kearney - 4 reps
  • Third place: Luke Stoltman - 3 reps
  • Third place: Yevgeny Markov - 3 reps
  • Third place: Martins Licis - 3 reps

Second day - Disciplines

Max Log Lift

In this discipline, the strongmen were tasked with getting as much weight as possible in three attempts on a log lift that was made of Austrian oak.

The first event of the second day was drastically slowed down due to an injury to JF Caron. Unfortunately, JF had to withdraw from the competition. Luke Stoltman then lifted the most weight, which won the event and made his hopes of a podium finish real again.

  • First place: Luke Stoltman - 470 pounds
  • Second place: Trey Mitchell - 461 lbs
  • Third place: Bobby Thompson - 450 lbs

Timber Carry

In the penultimate event, athletes had to carry a 400 kg (881.8 lb) timber frame up a 10.7 m (35 ft) long ramp. The rules were as follows - if the strongmen made it within the 30-second time limit, the result was measured in seconds. If they failed, then the result represented the total distance walked.

It was an extremely brutal event for most of the competitors. Only Maxime and Martins were able to carry the frame the full length of the ramp.

  • First place: Maxime Boudreault: 8.41 seconds
  • Second place: Martins Licis - 10.03 seconds
  • Third place: Oleksii Novikov - 9.4 metres

Stone to Shoulder

The goal of the last discipline was to lift the famous "tombstone" of Oddo Haugen from the ground to his shoulder. The stone weighed 186 kg (410 lbs) and if the competitor got it on his shoulder, the stone had to remain in a stationary position. The time limit for the discipline was 2 and a half minutes. If the athlete got the stone on his chest, he received 10 points. However, if he got it on he received 100 points.

The only one who could get the stone on his shoulder twice was Martins Licis. In second place was Oleksii Novikov who at least managed to get the famous "tombstone" on his chest in the second attempt.
