Martins Licis Wins Rogue Invitational Strongman 2021 | Report
The Rogue Invitational Strongman 2021 took place last weekend and once again showed the world how beautiful, yet difficult, the sport of strongman can be. Ten of the world's best competitors were invited to compete in this event, not only for the title of the event, but also for the $133,351 that was up for grabs. Five really tough events awaited the competitors over the course of two days: the Elephant Bar Deadlift, Cyr Dumbbell Ladder, Wheel of Pain, Timber Yoke Carry and Overhead Log Press Medley, and Inver Stone. Now let's take a look together at how each discipline went, who won them and how the competition went overall.
Event 1 - Elephant Bar Deadlift
The first discipline that awaited the strongmen was the deadlift on the "Elephant Bar". The competitors had to lift as much weight as possible in three attempts. This was best done by Canadian JF Caron, who managed to pull 420kg to his waist! Second place went to Scotsman Tom Stoltman with 413kg and third place went to Martins Licis who successfully pulled 410kg to his waist!
- JF Caron - 420kg (926lbs)

Event 2 - Cyr Dumbbell Ladder
After the deadlifts, the strongmen were faced with lifting five differently weighted dumbbells - 253, 274, 280, 290 and 300 pounds. Strongmen had a time limit of two and a half minutes for this event. The fastest was Oleksii Novik from Ukraine, who got all five one-arms over his head in just 65 seconds! No one else managed to climb all five monorails like Novik, followed by Martins Licis, who was the best placed, overcoming three monorails in 35 seconds. This time Mateusz Kieliszkowski of Poland was third.
- Oleksii Novikov - five dumbbells in 65 seconds

Event 3 - Wheel of Pain
This event was inspired by the wheel that Arnold Schwarzenegger had to push in the movie Conan the Barbarian. However, this wheel weighs 20,000lb and the goal of the competitors is to spin the wheel as many times as possible in one minute. The winner is the one who "goes" the farthest. Even though Tom Stoltman, a Scotsman, had never spun this wheel before, he managed to go the farthest of all the competitors - 89 feet. Second was Licis and third was Kieliszkowski.
- Tom Stoltman - 89 feet
- Martins Licis - 85 feet
- Mateusz Kieliszkowski - 83 feet
- Oleksii Novikov - 76 feet
- Luke Stoltman - 73 feet
- Rob Kearney - 63 stop
- Mikhail Shivlyakov - 55 stop
- Brian Shaw - 54 stop
- Jerry Pritchett - 50 stop
- JF Caron - 29 stop
Event 4 - Timber Yoke Carry and Overhead Log Press Medley
The penultimate event was really tough and it took a lot of self-denial to overcome it. What was it all about? First, the competitors had to travel 50 feet with a yoke that weighed 1000lb (455kg) and then they had to get an overhead log lift 3 times in a row weighing 163kg! On top of that, they had to do it all in a time limit of two and a half minutes. Mateusz Kieliszkowski from Poland managed to complete this discipline in the shortest time.
- Mateusz Kieliszkowski - 0:41,74
- Martins Licis - 0:44,70
- Tom Stoltman - 0:52.06
- JF Caron - 0:56.03
- Oleksii Novikov - 1:05.51
- Brian Shaw - 1:37.83
- Luke Stoltman - two reps on the log in 37 seconds
- Rob Kearney - one rep in the log in 27 seconds
- Mikhail Shivlyakov - yoke in 50 seconds
- Jerry Pritchett - did not go any distance
Event 5 - Inver Stone
In the fifth and last event, as is customary, stones awaited the competitors. However, not Atlas stones, but the so-called Inver stones. These have a different shape compared to the Atlas stones and are not so perfect oval. Weighing 275, 300, 365, 400 and 420 pounds, the strongmen had to lift these stones over a 50-foot high hurdle. It was very interesting to guess who would win this event. I'm sure many fans were betting on Tom, who is nicknamed the "King of the Stones" in this event, but Licis was able to beat Tom.
- Martins Licis - five stones in 24.45 seconds
- Tom Stoltman - five stones in 30.08 seconds
- JF Caron - five stones in 43.51 seconds
- Oleksii Novikov - four stones in 1:04.5 seconds
- Rob Kearney - four stones in 33.4 seconds
- Luke Stoltman - three stones in 17.6 seconds
- Jerry Pritchett - two stones in 13.3 seconds
- Mikhail Shivlyakov - two stones in 12.1 seconds
- Mateusz Kieliszkowski - one stone in 9.4 seconds
- Brian Shaw - no lifts
