Kickers and their desirable and side effects

What's behind the energy that drives you forward?

Nowadays, as fitness and a healthy lifestyle become a normal part of many people's lives, the popularity of various dietary supplements is growing. And among them, the so-called pre-workouts, or kickers, are clearly leading the way. Colourful pills full of energy that promise to turn you into a workout machine in minutes.

But what's really behind this quick boost of motivation? Why do they work, when is it ideal to take them and what side effects can they have? Let's put them under the microscope a bit - without exaggeration, but also without embellishment.

What are kickers - and why are more and more athletes reaching for them?

A kicker is a combination of substances designed to stimulate the body and mind before physical performance. It is most commonly taken 30-45 minutes before a workout, in the form of a powder mixed in water. Their popularity is not accidental - they promise what we are all looking for after a long day: quick energy, improved concentration and greater performance.

For many people, pre-workout is literally a mental switch. With just the first sip, the brain switches from "I survived the workday" to "I'm going to get fit" mode. But how does it actually work?

The main components of kickers - what makes the magic happen?

Pre-workouts are often a mixture of multiple active ingredients. And each of them has its own specific role. Let's introduce the most common ones:

1. Stimulants - when you need to step on the gas

  • Caffeine: the basis of almost every kicker. It stimulates the central nervous system, increases attention, reduces fatigue and improves reaction time. A typical pre-workout dose is 150-300 mg, equivalent to 1-3 strong cups of coffee.
  • Taurine: Helps calm the nervous system and works synergistically with caffeine. It improves hydration and may relieve restlessness caused by high doses of caffeine.
  • Synephrine (bitter orange extract): A mild stimulant that promotes fat burning and increases energy expenditure. Acts similarly to ephedrine, but with less risk of side effects.

2. Substances for performance and muscular endurance

  • Citrulline: improves blood flow to the muscles by promoting the production of nitric oxide (NO). The result is the well-known "pump effect" - more muscle pumping and better nutrient transport. In addition, it reduces fatigue during exercise.
  • Beta-alanine: Enables longer performance by counteracting muscle acidification. A typical side effect? Tingling on the skin - uncomfortable but harmless.
  • Creatine monohydrate: A good old friend among supplements. Increases ATP stores, the main fuel for muscle work. As a result, it boosts both explosiveness and recovery between sets.

3. Nootropics - focus on every movement

  • L-Tyrosine: Helps the body cope with stress and maintain focus. Particularly suitable for hard workouts or early morning exercise.
  • Choline bitartrate: A precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an important role in the transmission of nerve signals. It contributes to improved coordination and the so-called mind-muscle connection - i.e. the connection between the brain and the working muscles.

4. Supporting ingredients for better absorption

  • Piperine (black pepper).

Why do people reach for them? The key effects of kickers

  • Rapid onset of energy - within 30 minutes you can feel your body "fired up".
  • Better focus - with nootropics you get into a training flow.
  • Increased strength and performance - especially with creatine and better blood flow.
  • Greater endurance - thanks to beta-alanine and citrulline, you can train longer.
  • Pump effect - pumped up muscles not only look good, but are also better supplied with oxygen and nutrients.
  • Promote fat burning - some stimulants slightly increase metabolism.

But beware - they are not for everyone! Kicker side effects and risks

There are two sides to every coin, and this is doubly true for kickers. If you overdo it with them, unpleasant effects can occur:

  • Insomnia - if you take a kicker in the evening, it can disrupt your sleep for several hours.
  • Shakiness and anxiety - higher doses of caffeine can make more sensitive individuals feel jittery.
  • Heart palpitations and pressure - a problem especially for people with cardiovascular problems.
  • Tingling (paresthesias) - caused by beta-alanine. It is harmless but uncomfortable.
  • Indigestion - the combination of ingredients can irritate the stomach.
  • Dehydration - increased sweating and mildly diuretic effects of caffeine.
  • Development of tolerance - frequent use reduces effectiveness. After that, it is necessary to either increase the dose (which is not recommended) or take a break.

How to take kickers safely? Basic rules

  1. Start with a half dose - this will see how the body responds.
  2. Don't take every workout - cycle, for example 4 weeks on / 2 weeks off.
  3. Don't take them in the evening - ideally no later than 6 hours before bedtime.
  4. Replenish fluids - drink plenty of water during and after training.
  5. Don't exceed recommended doses - "more" definitely doesn't mean "better".
  6. Monitor your condition - if you feel palpitations, anxiety or nausea, take a break.
  7. Consult a doctor - if you have health problems or are taking medication.

They are not miraculous. They are a help, not a shortcut.

Kickers are a powerful tool - but only when combined with quality sleep, diet and training. They won't shape your body on their own. See them as a supplemental support, not a necessity. And if you ever choose to train without them - that's perfectly fine too. They can be a great tool when you need to switch gears, overcome laziness or get the most out of your workout. But it's important to approach them with respect and discretion. A good workout isn't just about caffeine, it's about consistency, recovery and discipline.

A kicker may kick you in the butt - but what really moves you forward is you.
