"Flush most of the extras down the toilet..." Here are 3 that actually work, says Arnold!
Open the pantry or kitchen cupboard at home. What do you see? How many of those pixels did you buy just because they had a great marketing story or promised overnight miracles?
Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his magazine The Pump Club, comes up with a hard truth that the supplement manufacturers won't like. The $177 billion industry capitalizes on your insecurities, but according to Arnold and his team, most of it is just "expensive urine."
"I've been that guy myself. My shelf looked like a small pharmacy," Arnold admits. "It took me years of studying research before I came to an unpleasant conclusion: most of it does nothing. Less is more."
According to the data his team analyzed, only three supplements deserve their place in the kitchen. They're boring, they're cheap, and they don't have aggressive advertising behind them. But unlike the rest, they actually work. Here's Arnold's "holy trinity."

1. Protein.
Arnold points out a common misconception: people think protein is just for bodybuilders.
"It's the building block of every cell in your body," he says in his magazine.
If you're trying to lose weight, protein is the factor that will decide whether you lose fat or the muscle you've been working out in the gym. For older people, then, it is literally an insurance policy against wasting away and losing self-sufficiency. Don't look at expensive brands and miracle blends. It doesn't matter if it's whey or a plant. The main thing is to eat 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kg of weight per day.
2. Creatine.
"I've recommended creatine to more people than any other thing in my career," saysArnold.
Why? Because the research is so consistent that it seems almost unfair to other supplements. It's not just about bigger muscles and strength anymore. Arnold's team points to new data from 2025: Creatine is key for the brain. It helps you function when you're sleep-deprived, stressed, and protects the brain from aging. Screw the modern "enhanced" versions, it's just a money grab. Buy plain creatine monohydrate. Take 5 grams for muscle, or 10-20 grams for a "bulletproof" brain.
3. Vitamin D: A must-have when you're not at the beach
This is a question of statistics. If you have enough vitamin D, more won't help. But according to Arnold's team, up to 50% of the population is deficient. If you work in an office or live in the Czech Republic, where the sun doesn't shine properly for half the year, this applies to you. Getting your vitamin D levels up has been shown to have an impact on everything from immunity to reducing your risk of dying from cancer. Don't guess. Get your blood measured. If you're low (below 30 ng/mL), take 1,000 to 3,000 IU a day.
Terminator's conclusion: you can't outsmart the basics.
Arnold's message is liberating: You don't need to spend thousands a month on miracle pills. Fat burners, BCAAs or testosterone boosters? Mostly wasted money, according to Arnold.
"The money you spent on dysfunctional supplements wasn't wasted because you're stupid, but because the information wasn't honest with you," Arnold writes.
The supplements are just the tip of the iceberg. If you're not eating well, not moving, and sleeping five hours a day, no pill is going to save you. But if you've got the basics right, these three substances are the only ones you can't miss in your kitchen cabinet.
