Mr. Olympia 2021 - what the semifinal fights offered
Although we already know the results of the 212 Olympia 2021, Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend is all about the annual Mr. Olympia competition. And this year's edition is no exception!
Nineteen heavyweights qualified for this year's Mr. Olympia competition, the fifty-seventh edition, but not all of them entered the competition. Seven-time champion Phil Heath did not attend the competition, Vladislav Sukhoruchko did not show up due to the coronavirus measures from the USA, and for the same reason Nathan De Asha, who won the premiere edition of the prestigious Arnold Classic UK last weekend, did not come either.
Sixteen fighters were on stage, including the winners of the two previous editions, Mamdouh Elssbiay, who was last year's champion, and Brandon Curry, who reigned over the professional division in 2019.
The semi-final duels were supposed to tell how this year's competition would turn out. Especially the first comparison, in which the judges called for a six-man line-up of Mamdouh Elssbiay, Brandon Curry, Hadi Choopan, William Bonac, Hunter Labrada and Nick Walker, with the Elssbiay-Curry pair posed in the middle of the line. So, according to the judges, that's the one fighting for the win! Alongside them, and therefore fighting for third to fourth place, was the pair Choopan - Labrada. Walker and Bonac were fighting for fifth to sixth place.
In the second comparison, Mohamed Shaaban, Akim Williams, Iain Valliere, Luis Rodriguez, Roelly Winklaar and James Hollingshead stood side by side at the request of the judges.
The third comparison was then determined by the four remaining competitors, which consisted of Andrea Presti, Patrick Moore, Regan Grimes and Hassan Mostafa. For them it was obvious that they would finish at the very tail end of the results list, which was really disappointing especially for Patrick Moore.
Mohamed Shaaban, Akim Williams, Roelly Winklaar and James Hollingshead lined up alongside each other for the fourth collation as they looked to challenge for a top 10 position.
A minor twist came in the fifth comparison, which saw the six of Nick Walker, William Bonac, Iain Valliere, Hadi Choopan, Hunter Labrada and Luis Rodriguez battling it out to see who would make it into the Top 5.
In the sixth comparison, the pair of Mr. Olympia title holders Mamdouh Elssbiay and Brandon Curry went head to head. It was so clear beyond the sun that they were fighting for their second win!
Curry, the 2019 Mr. Olympia titleholder, according to many in attendance, is racing more balanced and full this year than he did last year, and even reportedly outdid himself just from 2019, which would indicate he is in the form of his life. Add to that the fact that he is the owner of one of the most imposing figures in bodybuilding history, and it seems he is very close to a second title!
Of course, Mamdouh "Big Ramy" Elssbiay, last year's champion, is also in excellent shape, which according to those present, can be compared to last year's. This time he is, of course, the most powerful fighter on the stage, and so he is also very well on his way to winning a second title!
So who will be the winner of this year's edition of the most prestigious competition in the world of professional bodybuilding? We will find out tomorrow night!
