The original Blood Sport is now one of the unshakable classics of the action genre. The film follows a hero as he progresses through an illegal and often brutal fighting tournament from one opponent to the next, eventually taking on a fearsome champion to honour his master. The film greatly popularised the world of mixed martial arts in its time, and was an absolute career turning point for the then budding Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The new remake will feature a major contribution from award-winning British actress and filmmaker Michaela Coel, who audiences may know as the writer and star of the hit TV series I May Destroy You, Black Mirror and the comic book Black Panther: Wakanda Lives. This will be her third collaboration with A24 Studio (after the upcoming projects First Day on Earth and Mother Mary).

"Warriors have always fascinated me. I admire the discipline and intensity that the sport requires," an enthusiastic Coelrevealed to Variety. "I look forward to exploring this world, especially with A24 by my side. Here we go!"

Tournament format returns to the big screen

The new project will be financed and distributed by independent company A24. Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi will sit in the producer's chairs, while Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle will serve as executive producers.

Producer Marc Toberoff is also excited about the upcoming project:

"The now iconic 1988 film Blood Sport introduced audiences to the gritty side of mixed martial arts. I look forward to bringing this energetic tournament format back to the big screen," he said, promising that the main idea and spirit of the original should remain intact.

It is not yet clear what the cast will be, or whether 65-year-old Jean-Claude Van Damme himself will appear in the new treatment, at least in a small cameo role. What is certain, however, is that fight movie fans have a lot to look forward to and the legendary tournament will be given a modern and spectacular coat.
