Shaun Clarida reveals plan to win third title at Olympia 2023

Shaun Clarida is still aiming to win his third title at Olympia 212, which is due to take place this November. In a recent YouTube video, Clarida, along with Bob Cicherill, outlined his plan and explained why he won't be prioritizing size over fitness during his preparation. Although Clarida doesn't have any of the advantages associated with a tall physique, he compensates with tremendous strength, thick musculature and dry conditioning. Dubbed a "mini Ronnie Coleman" year after year, the strongman continues to prove what is possible.
With his combination of symmetry, muscularity and fullness, Clarida won the Olympia 212 title for the first time in 2020. Succeeding at the Olympia is no easy task and Clarida failed to retain his gold in 2021. He succumbed to Derek Lunsford. Then in 2022, Derek accepted a special invitation to the Mr. Olympia Open, where he placed second. Meanwhile, Clarida regained his Olympia 212 title in dominant fashion in December.
Clarida speaks candidly about his sporting ambitions. He plans to break the record of Flex Lewis, who won seven titles at 212 Olympia. If Clarida succeeds, he will be one step closer to that ambitious goal, as the next edition of Olympia is coming up in less than three months.
"If I won Olympia at 170-180lbs, why change it?" Shaun Clarida on his upcoming title defence
In addition to talking about his ambitions, Clarida also touched on the growing threats in his division, such as Keone Pearson, who recently won gold at 212 at Texas Pro 2023
"I'm waiting to hear from him three times," Shaun Clarida said.
"It's a new competition this year, right? We're seeing shots of your buddy Keone in there. Looks like he's got his head on straight. That kid is trouble," said Bob Cicherillo.
"Listen, I respect every guy on the stage, they all belong there, right? I'm just focusing on me. He's been great. He was actually here last night," said Shaun Clarida.
"My goal and my vision is just to fast forward, get that three and wrap it up."
Clarida plans to take the stage in the 170-180 pound range and stressed that he won't prioritize size over fitness this season.
"I'm around two hundred pounds," Clarida said. "That's right. If I won the Olympia with a weight around 170-180, why change it? I'll be better, I'll probably be a little sharper, these things can always be improved. As far as getting bigger, I don't necessarily need that."
"When you come in with razor-sharp conditioning, that's usually the difference at Olympia; that's just smart planning," Bob Cicherillo said.
"When I talked to some of the judges last year after I left the Olympia stage, they literally told me, 'Don't change anything.' So when they told me that if those judges are the ones who judged me and gave me that first place, I'm going to listen to everything they say."
"As you say, if it's not broken, why should I fix it," Clarida declared. "I'm just going to focus on winning. I don't worry about losing, I focus on winning."
Mr. Olympia 2023 will be held from November 2 to 5 in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention Center. Fans are anxiously awaiting to see if Shaun Clarida can extend his reign and become a three-time 212 Olympia champion, and we'll keep you posted!
