One week to the start: supercompensation through the eyes of Kateřina Vomáčková
A look back at supercompensation in Sweden
Preparing for bodybuilding competitions is a marathon full of hard work and determination. But if I had to pick one week that is the most mentally and physically demanding, it would undoubtedly be the last one - the week of supercompensation. It is this phase, with careful manipulation of carbohydrates, water and salt, that has the potential to take race form to a whole new level. This is no magic trick, however. If the athlete is not fit enough or still has a high percentage of body fat, supercompensation will not work miracles. It is a final tune-up for those who are already perfectly fit.
The exhaustion phase and the subsequent replenishment phase
The first half of supercompensation week is usually brutal. The body languishes on minimal carbs, or even no carbs at all, and water intake increases drastically. It's no wonder one feels extremely tired, hungry, exhausted, and constantly on the toilet. During these days, it is crucial to limit strenuous physical activity to avoid negatively affecting form.
In the second half of the week, the tables are turned. Carbohydrates start to gradually increase to fill the muscles with glycogen, while water intake decreases. Although one looks forward to carbohydrates, the sudden burst of energy and change in metabolism can be paradoxically exhausting.

My trip to Sweden: not even illness broke my form
Supercompensation is not a necessity for every athlete, but for those who choose to undergo it, it can bring breathtaking results on the podium. In my case, it was a key part of my preparation for the first start of the season in Sweden.
And I have to say, it was challenging. Especially this year when I unfortunately went into the week with a cold. It made me all the more tired and exhausted. But in retrospect, I'm extremely glad I didn't give up. All the hard work and discomfort paid off because I really showed the form of my life in Sweden. I was proud of myself.
I have documented my whole journey, including those tough supercompensation days and the atmosphere of the race in Sweden. Stay tuned for a show day vlog soon to see how it all went down!
