Madness or genius? Sulek risks everything and prepares for AC 2026 without help

Sam Sulek is an anomaly in the bodybuilding world. He gained international fame and millions of followers before he ever set foot on a competition stage. After a successful year in 2025, when he earned his pro card (winning the NPC Legends Classic and then the Arnold Amateur), he now faces his first stern test among the elite in the Classic Physique category. And he decided to face it "solo".

Why without a coach? "The mirror is my check-in"

Most professionals at this level rely on "guru" coaches who precisely dose their food, training and supplementation. However, Sulek explained in a recent video that for him, self-coaching is a more natural and easier route.

"I want to do my own thing and just see what happens. That's the way it works for me," Sulek said.

He cited simplicity and speed of decision-making as the main advantages.

"I don't have to send form photos (check-ins) to anyone and wait for a response. I just look in the mirror. That's my check-in."

Sulek stressed that he is not saying having a coach is bad - on the contrary, for many athletes it is essential. However, he prefers to be in full control of the process, whether it turns out well or poorly.

A sharp debut in a tough competition

Sulek will take the stage in Ohio in early March 2026. It won't be easy. The Classic Physique category is loaded with stars. He will be up against experienced champions like Wesley Vissers and defending champion Mike Sommerfeld.

For fans, it will be fascinating to see if Sulek's old-school approach, based on feelings and his own judgement, will hold up in the modern era where every detail is fine-tuned based on data.

The "coach yourself" trend?

Interestingly, Sam Sulek isn't the only big name heading to the 2026 Arnold Classic without a coach. Nick Walker in the Open, who fired his coach after his failure at Olympia, has announced a similar move and is also relying on his own intuition.

We'll find out if Sulek's bet on independence pays off on March 5-8, 2026 in Columbus. But one thing is certain: it will be one of the most watched professional debuts in history.
