Legendary bodybuilder Frank Zane reveals his 3 rules for proper training

Even years after retiring from his professional career, bodybuilding icon Frank Zane still has a lot to offer. The three-time Mr. Olympia champion recently shared three basic rules for proper training on his Instagram. If you follow them, they’ll help you build muscle effectively and, most importantly, injury-free.

In his day, Zane debunked common myths. Although he was significantly smaller than his competitors at the time, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, he managed to defeat them thanks to his incredible symmetry, proportions, and extreme definition. He was nicknamed “The Chemist” and became famous for his analytical approach to the body and training.

Today, at the age of 84, Frank Zane remains a respected authority and regularly shares his lifetime of experience on social media. Here are his three main principles for building a champion’s physique:

1. Proper Form

First and foremost, Zane emphasizes the absolute necessity of proper exercise form. The goal of training should not be merely to move weight from point A to point B, but to engage the muscles with precision.

“It’s essential to ensure that exercises are performed correctly. That’s the only way to maximize their effectiveness and minimize the risk of injury,” Zanepoints out .

Strict technique will keep you in the game for the long term because it protects you from joint wear and tear and unnecessary injuries.

2. Time Under Tension (TUT)

The second rule focuses on how long the muscle is actually working during a set. Quickly “throwing” the weights around doesn’t yield the same results as controlled movement.

“You have to learn how to keep your muscles under constant tension during your workout to promote their growth,” he explains .

Zane isn’t the only Mr. Olympia winner who swears by this method. Former four-time champion Jay Cutler also recently emphasized the importance of muscle tension over simply lifting the heaviest possible weights. The same philosophy is espoused by popular 1990s bodybuilder Lee Priest, who claims that you can build a massive back using only calisthenics (such as pull-ups) if you focus specifically on time under tension.

3. Rep Ranges

The third pillar is strategically adjusting the number of repetitions based on exactly what you want to achieve. There is no single magic number that works every time and for everything.

“It’s essential to understand the ideal number of repetitions for your specific training goals,” advises Frank Zane.

For building raw strength, a lower number of repetitions with heavier weight may work, while for hypertrophy (muscle growth) or definition, it’s often better to choose a higher rep range with perfect form (combined with the time under tension mentioned above).

Training like a legend will literally wear you out. Don't even try it without the right gear!

It all sounds so nice—putting your ego aside, slowing down, and focusing on perfect form and holding the tension. But in practice, there’s one huge catch. When you hold a muscle in maximum, devastating tension throughout an entire set, it’s a whole different league of pain than just mindlessly lifting weights. This training style is a brutal shock to your central nervous system. If you want to get massive gains from it and don’t want to completely burn yourself out after a few weeks, just gritting your teeth and sheer willpower won’t be enough.

The solution, however, is clear—you have to throw your body a lifeline before it completely burns out. Slow, controlled repetitions burn through muscle glycogen at a rocket-like pace and crush your endurance. To avoid collapsing halfway through your workout, you need to fuel your muscles even during the toughest moments. Rely on a powerful intra-workout supplement with amino acids that acts as an instant energy boost. It’ll prevent premature failure, keep your focus at its peak, and let you push past the pain threshold.

And even if you minimize the risk of silly injuries with precise technique, your tendons and ligaments will groan under constant pressure. To keep pushing your limits over the long term and avoid chronic issues, strong, comprehensive joint nutrition is an absolute must for every hard-training athlete. It will wrap your cartilage in a bulletproof shield, lubricate your joints, and reliably nip any inflammation in the bud before it even starts.

And when you finally crawl back to the locker room, your body shaking? That’s exactly the moment when your muscle fibers—devastated by prolonged strain—are crying out for help the most. Immediately provide them with the best building blocks in the form of premium whey protein. It will instantly halt muscle breakdown, cut your recovery time to a minimum, and transform all that hard work in the gym into pure muscle mass.

Ditch the excuses and stop just mindlessly swinging those weights around. Slow down your movements, take absolute control of every muscle fiber, arm yourself with this trio of supplements, and show everyone that a true physique is built not only through hard work but also through smart tactics!
