Legend Rich Gaspari advises: How to get in perfect shape in "Peak Week" and why 3 days is not enough?
Rich Gaspari, the man who defined the term "brutal preparedness" in the 1980s and was the first bodybuilder in the world to show separated glutes on stage, has a clear message for today's generation of competitors: Your final week is too short.
In a recent post, the "Dragon Slayer" shared his strategy for what he calls Peak Week (the last week before a competition). According to him, many of today's athletes make the fundamental mistake of trying to "tighten up" their form too late.
Why is 3 days not enough time to "sugarcoat"?
Gaspari notes a trend where athletes start carbing up up up to three days before they take to the podium.
"I've never believed in three days of sugaring. To me, that's just not enough time," explains the veteran.
His golden rule is clear: You have to be ready two weeks before the show.

Gaspari's 10-day plan for winning form
Rich recommends a strategy that worked for him during his most successful years at Mr. Olympia:
Phase 1: Hard Depletion (10th to 5th day before the show)
This period is all about depleting all the glycogen from your muscles.
- Diet.
- Cardio: An hour to an hour and a half a day.
- Goal: To get the body to the limit and "dry out" the muscles so they are ready for subsequent performance.
Phase 2: Gradual sugaring (Monday to Thursday)
If the competition is on a Saturday, Rich starts carb loading on Monday.
- Training: intensity is reduced to allow the body to recover.
- Cardio: Limits or skips altogether.
- Form check: Thursday is the key day. If you are "flatter" on Thursday, you need to add carbs. If you are already looking full, keep your levels up.
Phase 3: Final tune-up (Friday and Saturday)
Friday is for minor adjustments. Then on Saturday you should look full, hard and feel energized, not "on death's door".
"On the day of the show you should feel amazing because your body is full of glycogen. As soon as you pick up a barbell, your muscles should explode," Gaspari adds.
Train smart, not selfishly
In addition to nutrition, Gaspari often warns against poor technique in the gym. Even at 62, he trains consistently, but with an emphasis on controlled reps. In his opinion, it's pointless to lift extreme weights with poor technique - it doesn't build muscle, but leads to injuries.
A summary of Gaspari's advice:
- Be in shape 2 weeks in advance - Peak Week is not for weight loss, but for glycogen handling.
- Don't be afraid of longer sugaring - 5 days will give you room to react to how your body looks.
- Listen to your body - Thursday is your barometer.
This approach made Rich Gaspari one of the most chiseled bodybuilders in history. Maybe it's time to stop rushing and bet on the proven school!
